"patriot" act extension

Recommended Posts

terrorism ins't gonna stop, no matter how many laws you throw at it and how many rights you trample. Best we can hope for is a lessoning of the acts. Best way I see to do that is to quietly seek out the main infractors and remove them, and try to stop :filtered: people off so much. Yes, some people will always dislike us, but do we need to keep antagonizing them? Terror isn't something you declare war on. War is for poverty and hunger and evil empires bent on taking over the world. Terror should be dealt with silently and proactively. Honestly, how many people have died from terrorism compared to drunk driving? Poverty? Treatable illness?

Angela, if you do reconsider, I suspect that you will find more that you disagree with. The Patriot Act strips power from individual citizens and gives it to big brother--the government.

We need to realize that there is more than one way to skin a cat. In fighting terrorism, we need to use tools that don't diminish democracy and individual freedoms.

The Patriot Act violates concepts fundamental to democracy. Expressed in the Bill of Rights, these first ten ammendments did more than proclaim the rights of men, they also curtailed the power over men held by the government. These ammendments were so critical to the American people that they refused to ratify the Constitution without them.

In a perfect society it might not be necessary to curtail government's power or institute checks and balances. There was and will be no perfect society. Our forefathers were wise to realize the importance of these fundamental rights and restrictions on the power of government. We would be wise to maintain them.

You are right in what you say, but you miss the Fundermental Point!

Governments all over the World are changing to meet the Terrorists, Mate!

Guess the best thing Citizens from ANY COUNTRY can do to stop these IDIOTS from killing innocent people and KIDS, is to report ANY suspicious behaviour from ANYONE, no matter where!

Hey, the Aussies are doing well at the World Swimming Championships, and Britain is on the back foot in Cricket, Mates!

You 'constitutional zealots' need to let your belts out another notch....re-write the bloomin thing and lose some of the paranoia for chrissakes!

You just stay in England...we'll keep our constitution.

The Patriot Act is a lost battle. It will be overturned, but not on the grounds it originally won on. Have patience and pick your fighting score.

This is how Adolph Hitler started---he collected information, made decrees that made it unlawful for certain people to live as normal citizens, just a bit at a time and , always had another excuse for limiting freedoms, especially those who weren't of certain ethnicity then it was soooooooo easy to just throw out all the laws, and do it all George Bush---(opps) Adolph's way

Feel secure people, your government is taking care of you :angry::angry::angry:

I don't see them limiting freedoms by ethnic group. In addition, the Bush administration is clearly supportive of our gun rights (as opposed to the Nazi Weapons Act of 1938). In addition to that we in the US are still policed by civilians, not soldiers. Hitler also restructured the government to make himself an absolute dictator. I think in order to make the comparison those things would need to change....and more.

The Nazi comparison is made over and over and is more than a stretch. Let us not forget that the Nazis were the National Socialist German Workers' Party.

Bush is telling every one what they want to hear!

The right hand is waving hello, and the people love it.

The left hand is stealing everything not nailed down!

The hand is quicker than the eye, all illusionists know this and use it!

I'm not sold on this plan that says we give up things and are better off for it!

:angry::angry::angry::angry:

Neither am I so sold on it.

But that hardly constitutes Naziism. Nor is it magic.

He isn't pulling anything over anybody's eyes, and this is probably the most open administration we have ever seen.

I agree with Iain. The Act will be overturned. I don't think it will last. To keep such a thing in place actually risks revolt I think....led by the Conservatives of course...since they have the guns. ;) Yes, I really think it could get that serious.

Patriot act sucks.

That sums it up pretty well for me.

I won't waste time sitting here yapping that its wonderful and in the next breath say I don't know what to think and maybe its not ok...

I have always said it sucks and I won't ever change my mind about it ;)

I don't have anything to hide, I am who I say I am, I don't participate in terroristic activities however my private business is just that. Private. This act is too vaguely worded and far too broad it encompasses too much and there will be alot of innocent people get thrown in with the guilty and their lives destroyed in the process.
