slow speed Xfinity

I went from Verizon (like the ol'AOL dial-up days of 56) to Xfinity. Supposed to be getting 400MBs but am only getting 180MBs + or -.

Win 7

CGM4140COM sisco (newest router)

Firefox or Comodo Dragon

3G mem

 I have scanned this PC so clean you can eat off the log files. No viruses, maleware,trojans...........

I keep very few programs loading at boot.

Add-ons are disabled

 I know it can connect at 400 because it has in the past.

 I have been beating my head into a wall with Xfinity.

 Two questions. well, maybe 3.

 Is it possible that Verizon left some file or .INI, .BAT or something that could limit my bandwidth?

 I have removed all verizon from add/remove but have yet to do a "very" thorough search in the registry etc...

 I have gone through the TCP/IP settings along with the router settings, internet settings etc..

 Which brings me to the next Q.

 They have it set so you can't change the DNS (everyone is so freaking proprietary) I used to use  JumpList Parser but can't force the DNS change.

 There must be a way.

 I know these are off the wall questions but someone "out there" knows how. There always is a way. Its just finding it.

Well there you have it! If "anyone" has "any" ideas please feel free to enlighten me .

Hey brian. 

 

Verizon wouldn't have left anything to limit your bandwidth and Comcast is notorious for speed irregularity, so your situation, unfortunately, all too common. I discovered the whole dns thing on my in-laws Comcast supplied Xfinity modem/router combo a while back, so you're right about that and their locking you out. Thankfully, you don't have to rent their equipment, you can purchase your own and have the freedom to set your own dns and prevent them from harvesting at least that much from your usage "tracks".

TX, I had a very frustrating experience with Comcast last fall in VA.  My son decided to have billing changed to his name and returned Comcast supplied Xfinity modem/router to their office and had them register his new modem on the spot.  Got it home, wouldn't lock in on signal.  Defective they said, so off to purchase another I went.  No go.... and another, and another for a total of 5, 2 different models from 3 different sources, all Comcast/Xfinity compatible, so they said.  Company finally came out, checked coax, changed wire into house, interface at box, but still no internet.  After a full week of no service, no answers, they finally brought one of their own modems and just like magic.... it worked.  So, back to paying their lease fee.  :(   Looked like neighbors had their own, Netgear being most common, but for some reason known only to God and Comcast, nothing would work for him except company supplied equipment.  Odd.
