how to normally format a external hard disk of 1.5 tb?

Recommended Posts

Hi, Even chkdsk /r on that volume has taken almost 7 hours to run. What is the safest method to plug in and plugout the Usb supported ext.hdd.?

I am having some trouble in safely remove usb and it gives me problem. When i opted the chkdsk it has found no error or bad sectors in the drive. I am afraid that i could format , the drive of that size. Is there any way of quickening the process? I imagine that it would atleast take four to five days to format that size of ext.hdd.

How to repair safely remove usb in this kind of ext.hdd.

Just my opinion, if you want to format it so that there is nothing left on the drive, with it plugged in, shut down the PC and reboot. After it boots to Windows go to My Computer/Computer and locate the drive, right click and select Format. In the pop-up that opens click the little box that says "Quick Format" and then Start. It shouldn't take more than 30 minutes if that long. ;)

yes all replies need you to come here to view them.

what exactly is the problems you're having?

all safely remove usb does is make sure everything has finished being written to the drive that is meant to be written to it so you don't lose any data then let you know when you can unplug it.

when you write data to a drive it first goes into memory then gets written to the drive, when the last piece is written to memory windows says it's finished, but in reality it hasn't finished writing what's in memory to the drive so if you remove the drive to soon, you'll lose that data and that's why you have the safely remove usb so this doesn't happen.

now doing a quick format or full format of the drive makes no difference to when you plug unplug a drive and if you lose data or not, so am really not seeing why you need to format the drive at all.

if you're having problems with lost data even after waiting to safely remove the external usb drive then i'd think the problem is with the drive itself failing and formatting quick or full will not make any difference, in fact doing a full format can even make things worse.

Hi, Thanks for your input. So, there is no difference in opting for quick format and normal format , if it is plug and play device. But i do not get the alert of safely remove usb, when i click the usb. Is there some settings to be applied to get this . Safe to remove the usb message does not come up. Just a progress of something sometimes. How to make , that it always alert? Is there any settings to be made to have this alert always.

It was working for sometime and then gone. Now i installed the windows freshly and now i am getting this alert. Where is the settings for this safe remove usb. pl. The links are of useful to me

yes there is a difference between quick and full format but not a difference that will effect in anyway how things work and whether it shows if it's safe to remove the drive or not.
