so in fact you do get a picture on the tv, just it's a desktop background/screen saver and not what you want to see which is the desktop with taskbar. correct?

is the tv the only display connected to the pc or is there a second/monitor also connected?

to me it sounds like the problem is you have 2 displays connected and the tv is not the main display or a mirror of the main display and is just an extended desktop, which means if you move the mouse off the side of the main display (either left or right side depending on display settings.) it will move onto the tv display.

so if you want to mirror or make the tv the main display then you will need to go into your display settings and make the correct changes needed for how you want things.

do you use ati/nvidia software to manage your display settings or just the windows os to manage the settings?

don't know what os you have but if you use windows to manage your display then this link should help :- https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/help/976064/guided-help-dual-monitor-setup-is-easy-in-windows-7

using ati/amd software this link should help :- http://support.amd.com/en-us/kb-articles/Pages/MultimonitorFAQ.aspx

using nvidia software then this link should help :- http://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/3148/~/how-to-set-up-multiple-monitors

It turned out to be a display setting. It was showing a 1 and a 2 and my friend had me click around in display and then the 1 and two were merged and that took care of it. Thanks for the help. It was the posts here that got my friend thinking about solutions.

personally i prefer having it set as an extended desktop, that way i can watch video's on the tv while also doing other things on the main display.
