Making bootable USB

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to make a bootable USB of Windows 7 for a a reinstall on a friends machine. They don't have an optical drive. I'm using USB Key Writer in OpenSUSE 13.2 KDE 64 bit and it keeps telling me "can't write this file".

The Windows 7 iso is a download from Microsoft so should be perfectly legal and legit. Friend has a legal Win7 product key for specified machine as well.

The USB stick I'm trying to use is 8GB so should be sufficient.

Am I doing something wrong?

Think that's the one I was following, thanks though!

Actually, might help if I format the flash drive first... wouldn't it? :rofl3:

Well I made sure the flash drive was empty and formatted and still get the same result. It says it can't write the file and to burn to a DVD. My optical drive (DVD-RW) is dead and won't read or write or anything.

No clue what to do now.

Maybe the .iso file is corrupt did you do a hash check on it?

Trying everything and getting lots of errors in the output. No clue what I'm doing wrong, but guess it's not going to happen.

Maybe had something to do with my lappy. Think it just died as it just powered off and won't turn back on. Plugging in the power adapter causes it to trip and the LED goes off. Unplugging it makes the LED come back on. So guessing the mobo just fried. Have to open it up and see for sure.
