I don't know squat about this stuff... but I don't think they can do any harm with it. It is my understanding that a potential buyer might want it to check that the phone is activatable. If a phone is reported stolen... it would be locked out and blacklisted, and if purchased - they would have a door stop as no carrier would activate it..

thanks guys. i ran the IMEI for the heck of it to see what if any info it would give out. all it gave out was that its activation ready and not black listed. which i already knew. so no personal info which is good. checked it on swappa.com.

biggest concern with giving out your imei is bad guys use it to clone a phone, from my understanding it is never a good idea to give out your imei number, and i wouldn't in your place.

While it may be illegal to change the IMEI of a device, it does happen. Thieves in particular will attempt to take non-blacklisted numbers and apply them to their stolen devices in order to make them usable again. For this reason it comes highly recommended that you never share or post your IMEI online, else you may find that your device can be cloned. In the interests of ongoing investigations by authorities, an IMEI can be used when wiretapping a device as well.
