Advice says lower your Internet ping speed

Recommended Posts

Advice on report says lower the internet ping speed. My current speed is 671ms and optimum would be 300 or less. I would like to fix it to the recommended level. How do I do that?

you can't do anything really if that's the only program your running connected to the internet and no-one else is using your connection at the same time, maybe try restarting your router/modem and see if that helps.

The ping is the reaction time of your connection–how fast you get a response after you've sent out a request. A fast ping means a more responsive connection, especially in applications where timing is everything (like video games). Ping is measured in milliseconds (ms).

This can happen when your connection is saturated such that either incoming or outgoing packets (either can affect latency and TCP throughput - saturated upload will mean slow downloads too) are placed in a queue. In other words, using > ~80-90% of the total available bandwidth is bad, and will affect network performance as a whole.

Bittorrent and other P2P applications tend to have such an effect, because they are typically constantly uploading and residential connections typically have rather limited upstream bandwidth.

Do you have other people sharing a network with you? Are you running anything that would use the connection intensively?

Occasionally, a router may actually fail - this does not always mean it will stop working completely (at least not immediately), but it can affect the connection in any number of ways, including response times. Additionally, a cheap NAT router with a large number of connections (as is common with Bittorrent and other P2P) might be suffering from overflow of the NAT table, leading to dropped connections and inability to open new connections. Consider temporarily bypassing the router to see if the problem persists.

Both the above cases might be temporarily solved by restarting the router - interrupting active downloads/uploads would remove the saturation temporarily, and the reset may temporarily "fix" failing hardware or clear the NAT tables.

Sounds like I really cannot lower the Internet ping speed. I do see the screen roll up and down and other anomalies that might make me think that I'm receiving bits too fast. Anyway, thanks for the reply, terry.

Cheers!

here's a link to test ping speed :- http://www.pingtest.net/

my result.

if it's a game giving you the slow ping speed, then maybe see if you can connect to a different game server that might be faster, but in all honesty i don't think there is really much you can do from your end, maybe have your pc checked for malware to see if that is having an affect on your internet/ping speed.

The results of a ping test vary depending on the quality of the Internet / network connection. A good broadband Internet connection (wired or wireless) typically results in ping test latency of less than 100 ms, often less than 30 ms. A satellite Internet connection normally suffers from latency above 500 ms.

this has more info, with links explaining how to do a trace route so at least you can see where the trouble may be.
