Windows updates and internet explorer won't install

Recommended Posts

I just installed windows xp home 32 bit on a computer like I have been doing for years, and I loaded all my drivers, then I tried to install internet explorer 8 from a usb jump drive and it won't go past downloading updates, and it didn't install.

I even tried to get ie8 from microsoft windows updates and I just tries to search for updates for hours and nothing.

I've tried to set to do automatic windows updates and nothing happens.

I manually downloaded and installed net framework 2 and 2 sp1 with not problems, thinking maybe that would speed things up.

I tried to install wga tool and it won't completely install without pressing control alt delete to force the program closed just like I did a couple of times with internet explorer 8.

I know that Microsoft say they support windows xp until April 2014, but, I think they have ended some microsoft windows updates already? I could be wrong.

Please help............

Do you have SP 3 installed?

Yes, I installed sp3 with the windows installation, it was built in the os, I can't use the above update because I was never able to install IE8

I set windows updates to automatic and left my computer on overnight and this morning I seen that windows updates were at %52 downloading, and then it went back to 0%, So, I went to shut down my computer and it gave me the option to install updates before shutting my computer down. Well, this is a good start, hopefully now I'll be able to continue to get all the windows updates. If I have anymore problems I'm going to use the microsoft fix it tool.

I'll let you know how it goes.........

well i had trouble updating my Win xp sp3 VM on virtualbox and thought it was trouble with Microsoft it would not start the updates just set there i even tryed Microsoft update through IE8

and it would hang and not get the updates then i found this

Microsoft Update may be broken for XP - Fix by mikiem2

Problem: Auto update or visiting the MS update site, searching for updates maxes svchost at 100% CPU with no search results [seems stuck in a loop].

Why: Seems ie8 needs updated for MS update to work, but the ie8 updates are included in the updates you can't find because update won't work.

Fix: Download & install the updates manually, which unfortunately is harder than it should be because MS says to use their broken update site. What I did...

I found this page that lists the contents of their update DVD ISO -- http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=41137

Under Details it lists the updates -- clicking on the KB heading take you to the svc bulletin page -> clicking on the link for it pros takes you to another page where you can click on the link for your Windows version. The one exception I found was a 404 page error for KB2868626 -- the link for the XP version is http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=40915

Note that you may have to kill svchost in Task Mgr if it's maxed out in order to manually install [or during install of] updates -- instead you might want to temporarily turn auto updates off, though it may take a restart to prevent svchost from maxing out the CPU.

The updates I added manually, after which MS update worked fine -- KB2888505, KB2868626, KB2900986 -- YMMV, you may not need all 3 as I didn't try MS update after installing each one.

Note also that optional win7 update KB2830477 breaks the win7 Virtual PC host.

http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/forums/topic/80389

after reading this i started Virtualbox with my Win Xp VM and sure enough windows update would not work and svchost was stuck at 25% cpu

so i downloaded the said KB's {KB2888505, KB2868626, KB2900986} and killed svchost in task manager then installed them manually restarted

and boom my windows update's started working again so if your windows updates after last patch tuseday on Win XP are not working you might give this a try

there is also this

Microsoft to fix Windows XP update SVCHOST redline issue 'soon'

Microsoft has identified why using Windows Update to install patches on Windows XP may lock up users' machines for hours on end

http://www.infoworld.com/t/microsoft-windows/microsoft-fix-windows-xp-update-svchost-redline-issue-soon-230940

and the said KB's that helped me

KB2868626http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=40915kb2900986http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=40920kb2888505http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=41064

:)

With less than a 6 month time frame left for XP, there's not going to be much interest to continue

If your still hanging on to XP then I suggest that it's time to make the switch to 7 or 8

i understand Joe C i got lucky and got a new pc with Win 8 this year now on Win 8.1

but some can't upgrade because of the cost i was there also but got lucky with money

i use Win Xp or Win 7 (30 day trial) on Virtualbox to test software to see if i like them

VB is a great tool to learn on (dual boot,Linux and such)

i just ran into Win Xp not getting updates and found a fix that worked for me after last

months patch tuseday and thought it could help

i just wonder how meany others it is affecting and thay do not know about it

if thay use auto updates from Microsoft thay might not know and become vulnerable as time

go's by and thats not good for no one i would guess

:)

Great info James, and I'm sure that others will benefit from your freely sharing what worked for you.

Those "catch 22" loops that occur with M$ updates can be waaaay too frustrating.

This particular post reflects such an issue with XP, but it does lay the ground work for all of us to explore when we are faced with a similar "catch 22" issue when updating Win 7 or 8.

............ and you know that we will. lol!

Post when you want and help when you can.
