repeating popup "virus" warning

Recommended Posts

Hi, I'm usually DIY for most viruses/spywares/etc but this time i'm stumped.

I keep getting this popup message which has the header "Dangerous Error!"

Attention, kat! Some dangerous viruses detected in your system. Microsoft Windows XP files corrupted. This may lead to the destruction of important files in I:\WINDOWS. Download protection software now! Click OK to download the antispyware. (Recommended)

There're 2 buttons Yes & No. I've never tried clicking Yes, and clicking No will close the box.

I've also discovered 2 things: 1)how to recur the popup, and 2) the Search is not functioning

1) recurring the popup - i open windows explorer, with Folders view. all i need to do is alternate clicking at the left panel in windows explorer between 2 folders and the popup will appear (eg. click folder 1, click folder 2, click folder 1..) The number of clicks to trigger the popup seem to be random, but it's anything from 1 to 6 clicks.

2) the Search is not working, will hang and i need to open task manager to kill it. winkey+F will open the Search Results window but it will hang soon afterwards.

I've run these apps prior to running HJT:

CCleaner, Avast anti-virus, RegScrub, Adaware, Spybot S&D, Registry Mechanic, CWShredder, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.

the problem still persist. So i've run HJT and mbam logs here:

help appreciated.

thanks.

Welcome to PCPitStop, please be aware that All advice given is taken at your own risk.

Sorry for the wait, the logs are many, and the volunteers are few.

When you reply, please use the "Add REPLY" button, not the Quote or New Topic buttons.

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

Tutorial

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Remove any old copies of combofix before you proceed.

Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.

It is important that it is saved directly to your Desktop.

Download ComboFix from Here to your Desktop

  • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Post the combofix log and a new HJT log.

Thanks

SOrry slowed response. I've discovered new development before i tried the suggested fix as above:

discovered that the problem is fixed. How it's fixed i'm not entirely sure. The only apps i installed last week (after i've run all the scans and posted the logs as in 1st post) was SuperantiSpyware. Unfortunately i didn't check immeidately after the scan (didn't expect it will fix the problem). So I'm not entirely sure if this SuperantiSpyware is the reason.

the Search function is also fixed, the window will no longer hang.

If mods would like me to post another HJT (for your research, etc) please let me know.

thx,

Since the anomalies no longer present, please close thread, thx.

Not sure how my post above is perceived to sound like i'm asking to believe in miracles. maybe i'm not being clear enough.

i'm just merely stating that i discovered the problem is gone, but i don't know the cause of it except to suspect that it happen after scan with superantispyware.
