psicon Report post Posted August 31, 2008 (edited) Just bought a new laptop, a gateway M-6881. Its a 2GHz Intel with 3GB of RAM, etc... Anyway, the wifi is Intel Pro Wireless 3954ABG. It works for a few minutes, then drops the connection, although the network manager still shows it connected. This is in Kubuntu 8.04.1 with all updates run. Is there something I can do to make this work, or can someone recommend a distro that they know will operate this wifi chipset? everything else works fine, but i gotta have my wifi... Thanks, -myk Edited October 1, 2008 by psicon
Bruce Report post Posted September 1, 2008 openSUSE worked great on the HP I had with the 3954ABG. I don't care for knetworkmanager, never really did, I aways used kinternet on my laptops.

psicon Report post Posted September 1, 2008 can you put me up some quick instructions on getting all the usual applications installed? I havent used Suse in a couple of years, need some assistance with how to set up multimedia repositories, etc, in the new version. I will try to install it in a few minutes here and see what happens. thanks,
psicon Report post Posted September 1, 2008 nevermind... it does the same thing with openSuse 11 even after all updates are run... Guess this is gonna be one of those days.. I am unfortunately typing this from my couch in Vista...
dimwit Report post Posted September 1, 2008 Are you using the iwlwifi driver or 3945 driver?
duanester Report post Posted September 1, 2008 sounds like a router problem if not wifi in the routers config what lease time are we looking, does this happen with other wireless pc's
psicon Report post Posted September 1, 2008 negative, i am using the laptop right now using vista for over an hour.
duanester Report post Posted September 1, 2008 (edited) the same laptop you used to run linux ? but the connections drop ? i would use a different module or that windows emulator thingy for the wireless ! i know of some modules that can over heat a chipset edit: ndswrapper i think Edited September 1, 2008 by duanester
psicon Report post Posted September 1, 2008 little more info, if it matters.. THe chipset is Intel 3954abg (rev 02)
duanester Report post Posted September 1, 2008 i read over in ubuntu forums a few with the same chipset has the exact same problem, one of which named out ndswrapper, sorry psicon, i am sorry i wasn't much help and goodluck
Bruce Report post Posted September 1, 2008 Which module are you using Myk? The iwlwifi or the older 3945 module?
psicon Report post Posted September 1, 2008 i believe it was iwl3945. I am going to try installing the modules from here, i think: http://www.intellinuxwireless.org/
Bruce Report post Posted September 1, 2008 Your correct it would be iwl3945 not iwlwifi. Can't see why it would be a problem, mine always worked rock steady with that module. Have you tried using kinternet instead of the wierd and in my opinion unreliable knetworkmanager.
psicon Report post Posted September 1, 2008 yup. Do you recall if your was a rev 02 or not?
Bruce Report post Posted September 1, 2008 Yep it was
psicon Report post Posted September 1, 2008 strange.. I wonder why this is happening? It has done the same thing across three distributions. I will check with the intel wireless mailing list and see what I can figure out. If you have any other suggestions, they are welcome. While Vista is at least working (very well on this system, i might add), I sure would prefer to go back "Home"
Bruce Report post Posted September 1, 2008 If this is a dual boot it could be that Vista isn't letting go completely of the card. Turn the machine completely off and leave it off for a couple minutes, then start it up and go directly to linux.
psicon Report post Posted September 1, 2008 If that's it, i'm gonna feel like an idiot.. Going to go reinstall and try. I removed Linux this morning so I could resize some partitions. I still got 120GB left for LInux, though. On a side note, OpenOffce 3 beta works lightning fast in Vista!
Bruce Report post Posted September 1, 2008 I can't say for sure that will be the problem, but that problem has existed since XP SP1 and Vista is just as notorious for doing it. It happens with wired and wireless connections and even with some sound systems.
psicon Report post Posted September 1, 2008 Posting from Kubuntu right now. Did a fresh install, ran all my updates, shut down completely. Washed the dishes, then cam back. So far, so good. One thing I noticed, and i'm not sure if it matters, my wifi is WPA2 encrypted. I had the network manager set for WPA1. I just manually changed it to WPA2, lets see if it makes a difference. WiIl post back in a bit for results.
psicon Report post Posted September 1, 2008 nope. dropped again.. If i reconnect, it works again for a short time..
Bruce Report post Posted September 1, 2008 Power control settings? Could power control be shutting it off?
psicon Report post Posted September 1, 2008 doubtful. I sat here using it the entire time, so power control didnt have a chance to do anything. The wifi light is still on. If i reconnect, it works again for roughly the same length of time
