The Curse of Being Free

Recommended Posts

Something I stumbled into last night, and it got me thinking.

Here's a link: http://blog.anamazingmind.com/2008/02/why-...e-of-being.html

The basic premise is that Linux does not spread because people are suspicious of something that doesn't cost anything, assuming commercial products are inherently superior, etc.

I'm curious to hear what some of y'all think about this as many of you have been using Linux for quite a while. Is there any merit to this argument, or is it only one guys' ramblings?

I read the whole thing a couple days ago, and happen to think his theory probably has merit.

A perfect example would the typical tag sale/garage sale.

You drive by the stuff on peoples front lawns all the time, you know the stuff with "FREE" sings on it. Most of it will sit there for ever.

Further down the street someone is having a tag sale with identical stuff on their front lawn and there are 4 or 5 cars there and people are "paying" for the same stuff they drove straight past just minutes earlier.

Perception is everything, true value means little to the average consumer so long as they "think" they are getting something valuable for a bargain.

I literally gave away two complete computers and enough parts to build a third here at the pit. Pretty decent machines with great specs.

I also have sold a lot of parts here at the pit, and a couple complete computers. Made a few grand in the process.

I sold my parts, and sold the computers faster then I gave away the free ones.

BTW, this would have been a perfect thread for the tech talk section, or even general discussions.

So much really good stuff is overlooked like this because it is hidden here in the "free" section of the forum.

Where is this free section at?

Im attempting to make a small cluster for my own amusement and to increase my linux skillz. But being a poor college kid, getting a machine is a pain! I just need two machines too..

Done and done. Nice irony, by the way.

they should charge 80 bucks for it but not put any security measures in it plus call each iso "CRACKED___Linux_SUSE_FLAVOR__KEYGEN.iso"

it would take over china in a day
