Sound/Wizards/Printer/Windows Installer Issues.

Recommended Posts

Hi.

I have recently been on the wrong end of some nasty virus'. I have managed to remove them from my computer with the help of Juliet. Here

However, the original reason for that thread was to try to get my sound back. She recommended I ask here.

From what I can tell so far, my Control Panel is pretty screwed up.

I have no sound, the inability to 'Add Hardware' (I click it, but nothing happens), it displays as "no audio device" in the sound properties window. I also cannot click properties or trouble shoot in the Sound, Speech and Audio Devices Properties, under the Hardware tab.

I try to open itunes, and I get this error message:

"iTunes has detected a problem with your audio configuration. Sound/Video playback may not operate properly"

Furthermore, I cannot use the Windows Installer to install software. I get this error message:

"The Windows installer service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running windows in safe mode, or if the windows installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance."

And that's not all. No printers/faxes are visible through the control panel, and neither is an internet connection. Yet clearly my internet is working fine. I cannot print any documents. If I try to print something, I get this message:

"No printers are installed. To install a printer, point to settings on the windows start menu, click printers, and then double click Add Printer. Follow the instructions in the wizard"

Finally, as far as I have experienced, I have no wizards of any sort. It will give me the message "The >insert name< service is not running.

I have also tried clicking on Help and Support, through the start menu, and by Start>Run, and I get the message:

"Windows cannot open Help and Support because a system service is not running. To fix this problem, start the service name Help and Support."

My system specs:

MS Windows XP SP2 (Media Centre Edition)

Intel Pentium 4

2.8GHz

2GB RAM

nVidia GeForce FX 5200

Any help will be much appreciated.

~Mr. Brightside

P.S. I'm not sure if this is actually the result of the virus' I received. I was also checking and unchecking boxes in msconfig startup. But I have rechecked them all and restarted; to no avail.

Do you have your windows cd

if not run sfc/scannow all the same

start/run/ sfc /scannow click ok

notice the space between the c and /

if there no problems it will turn off by itself

this your windows file protection

next do a chkdsk

Start/run/chkdsk /r/click ok

notice the space between the k and the /

At the command prompt type the letter ypress enter

chkdsk cannot run at this time...another volume is using it

restart your computer....this may take 1 hour or 2 depending on your harddrive do not disturb this

and run a cleaner to make sure no bits and pieces are left behind

heres clean-up

http://www.stevengould.org/index.php?optio...9&Itemid=70

start/run/dfrg.msc/click ok

click defragment.......this may take some time depending on your harddrive

and do a pitstop test

http://www.pcpitstop.com/techexpress/howto1.asp

I did all of the above, except the Pitstop test. It seems as though I am not able to. I created an account for it, then signed in, but the "Test This Machine" option was not there. I hope I'm not doing something stupid. I had a quick read over the Troubleshoot section for it, but didn't find an answer.

Anyway, even after doing all those tests/checks/clean/defrag, I am still unable to access the things stated in my first post :(

One thing you can check real quick is your plug and play.

Go to Start>Run>Type= services.msc

Scroll down to plug and play and make sure it's set to automatic.

It wasn't set to Automatic. So I did that. Didn't make a difference, but maybe this error message can give a clue as to wth is happening to my comp :cr@sh:

I get this message with quite a few all of the services. Just by double clicking them. Or right clicking and selecting properties.

But when I changed the setting to "Automatic" and clicked okay, it seemed to stick when I went back in afterwards.

Update:

I still can't see my printer in Control Panel

I still can't press "Add Printer". Error Message: "Operation could not be completed. The print spooler service is not running"

I still can't see my Internet Connection in "Network Connections"

I can now Add Hardware

It still says I have no audio device - even after uninstalling and reinstalling my sound driver. (It says its working properly, and is enabled)

I still can't access Help and Support.

I think that screen shot pretty much says it all, every service that is shown is disabled. Going to take a bit of time but go here,

http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm

and follow the default settings for ALL services and set them accordingly. If that fixes it then you can go back and disable any/all that you don't use or need.

Lol! Thanks stormy. Ironic that the person who told me to ask at the PC Pitstop forums, is the one who solved my original problem :P

Works Perfectly Now.

I knew eventually I would post a screenshot showing the secret way of screwing up your computer. I can finally watch the new Prison Break!!!!!!!! w00t!

Is this something I have done through msconfig? Or could it have been the viruses I got?

Thank You Everyone!

For that may services to be disabled, it had to be from one of the viruses you had.

Now just be careful what you download and what sites you visit. ;)
