sfc /scannow..tried to fix via registry..but fail to work

Recommended Posts

i dont want to use the recovery cds

nor do want to use system recovery

and i dont have system restore to go that far back

but i tried this fix and it didnt work

im using HP slimline

and poweroutages have created some problems

so i ran sfc /scannow

it appears 5 or 6 .dll files are corrupt or damaged

being an HP they never sent the windows cd or provided it

when i bought the computer

xp home media

heres what i tried so far

i open regedit

and went to this sub key

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup

click on sourcepath

it was c:\windows

changed it to c:\i386

restarted computer and ran sfc /scannow

it still prompts for windows cd

i know this file exsist in d drive

but its like this d:\i386

this is where im stuck

if i try to retrieve from d drive and change the registry

to d:\i386 what are the reprecussions

will it work

will cause unstable windows

or will it kill my computer

i have searched for the cd on the web

but microsoft has decided to use it as vista home premium

and windows xp home media center cant be sold

mme, you almost got it right. The registry key is correct but the source path is wrong. The source path should point to the root ........C:\

Your i386 folder should be copied from the cd to the root of C drive. :)

Once you change the source path, be sure to reboot.

the source path in the registry read just like this

c:\windows

but how ever i want run sfc /scannow at boot up

so i need to change the value of winlogon to enable

sfc /scannow will copy the files at boot up

heres a screen shot does sfcdisable the correct value to change...0 is disable...1 is enable

when ever i run sfc /scannow right at the very end when its finishing i have to cancel 5 times

which why im assuming there are 5 files

i know ntdll.dll was one that showed up as needs to close

unfortunately they dont show

the computer is fine

it has 1.43 gigs of ram

im going to post a pitstop test

as soon as scannow is finished
