Vista Home Won't Fax

Recommended Posts

I have used my computers to send and receive faxes for many years at home and my one man office and I have recommended it to my clients as well. It avoids having a fax machine and wasting paper on fax spams.

Now Microsoft has elected to leave it out of the Home versions. They state "Windows Fax and Scan is on the main All Programs menu of the Windows Vista Business and Windows Vista Ultimate editions. It can be installed as an optional component in Windows Vista Enterprise." What they don't say is that it is not even an option in Home and Home Premium. This is either a stupid mistake thinking faxing is only done by offices or it is intentional to make users buy a more expensive version. Well guess what? Many offices are using the feature in XP and are going to be really upset when they upgrade thinking they can use Home versions. As for me, I will not buy Vista and am telling everyone I know not to. See http://www.barrett.net/fax.html

I looked on line for a simple program to do it and all I could find was stuff designed for companies who broadcast.

If I decide I need a new machine, I'll uninstall Vista and install XP. Or maybe best yet, I'll just rebuild my existing machines.

Anybody know of a simple, inexpensive (or free) fax program?

Most of the modems that I have installed for people have some sort of basic faxing software that comes with the modem.

After thinking about it, these may not be compatible with Vista anyway.

kg7ka,

This is unfortunate for peope who don't read what they're getting with the different Vista operating services.

I believe it's being looked into because of so many complaints like yours.

Just the fax?

QUESTION: Now I have this new Vista machine (only had it for two days) and I can locate the fax modem, but I do not have any way to send a fax. One tech support said since I have Home Basic, I cannot use the fax modem. Another told me that if I looked hard enough I would find the fax console, and yet another told me I had to install third party software. PLEASE help me! I need my fax sending ability. Thanks! -Angie H.

ANSWER:

I'm afraid the person who told you to install third party software is correct. If you take a look at the features comparison list for the Vista editions, you'll see that Vista Home Basic doesn't include the Windows Fax and Scan program - and in fact, neither does Home Premium, since faxing is considered to be more of a business application. It's included in Business and Ultimate editions. Link here.

I checked out snappysoftware and it may be an answer but it is a shame to have to pay 30 bucks for something that was free in XP. Thanks

This site page http://www.savetz.com/fax/ that I eventually got on an Internet search about faxing with Vista Home and our history as a small business of using several versions of Windows to fax out was extremely helpful. I had already started using efax for 20 free incoming faxes per month but at times needed to send out a fax or two per day. So combined with that I am trying FaxZero at the moment. It seems to best meet our needs and offers a cost free solution at least until Microsoft maybe adds the utility to home and premium in a SR ...? Thanks again so much as I was getting nowhere when I first migrated to Vista and searched a couple months ago.
