"Exterminate" not completing : Directory not recognized, cou

Recommended Posts

Tried running "Exterminate" overnight after downloading yesterday afternoon, but it has stopped with the message as in the Subject.

It also says "The scan was not completed. To start a new scan, click Back, and then Next." ... but I don't see the point of that until I know what's causing this !!!

Any help appreciated ...

Please post a Tech Express link so we can take a look. If you haven't done that before, this should help:

Please try running Exterminate in Safe Mode, after first letting it update the signature files in Windows.

To access Safe Mode in Windows XP, repeatedly tap the F5 or F8 key while the computer is booting up. Once the menu opens, select Safe Mode, and later when prompted, administrator. The screen will look different because the video driver is not loaded. That will return to normal after a reboot. To run Exterminate, you may need to go to Start>Programs>PC Pitstop>Exterminate if the desktop icons are not present.

Will try the Safe Mode when I get a chance, too busy at the moment.

I just noticed that the Subject is half missing ... if it helps, the full error message is :

"Directory not recognized, could not enumerate. (6)"

Thanks for the rest of the message. What version of Windows are you using?

Rather than safe mode, you may first want to try a complete reinstall.

To do a complete uninstall/reinstall, go to Start>Programs>PC Pitstop>Exterminate>uninstall PC Pitstop Exterminate and run the uninstaller.

Once that completes, go to My Computer>C:\>Program Files>PC Pitstop>Exterminate and delete the entire Exterminate folder.

Now do a reinstall with a new copy of the program from here:

I'm using Windows XP Professional, with all Microsoft updates applied (except for Media Player 11).

I'll try the uninstall / reinstall as you suggest & let you know what happens, thanks ...

Hi again ... OK, I uninstalled & re-installed & ran a Quick scan ... that worked fine, so I tried a full scan again & got the same problem, "Directory not recognized, could not enumerate. (6)".

I was only trying out this software, I haven't bought it & I don't think I will be now, sorry ...
