Windows installer!

Recommended Posts

Hiya folks, I'm hoping someone can advise me here?

All of a sudden my PC seems intent on opening a Windows Installer icon box whenever I open Office Word or Outlook Express! I have been into the registry and under the group policy icon I have disabled the Installer option, but I'm still having the same problem.

Please can anyone offer any advise as its pure doing my head in!!!!!!

:pullhair::pullhair::pullhair::pullhair:

Thanks

did this problem start when you checked email with outlook

was there a clip you opened that required office word to open

windows installer doesnt always run when these programs are open

unless you opened a clip or a email attachment

when you run spybot are there any errors that may relate to outlook or office word

its possible windows installer could be corrupt

Hmmmm, this problem sounds familiar, newonnet.

A couple of days ago, Windows Update installed a few goodies, and Outlook Express started acting up. Every time I tried to use OE, a Microsoft Office installer would show up, and nothing could get past it.

Went to Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, and found an update for Microsoft Office. Removed the update, and all was well...

thanks for the reply. I have taken your advice and tried to remove the updates, but i'm told that 'the instilation is forbidden by system policy'?

Any ideas what that means?

Thankyou

when you look at the updates look to the right try to find the date or time your computer started acting up with windows installer if it was recent look for the most recent ones if you can locate the update thats causing windows installer to go crazy then uninstall it

to do this you may have remove each one and tryoutlook and office word the ones that you uninstall can be downloaded

Thanks for your reply mate, but as I said in my prevoius post, for some reason I am not allowed to remove the updates. I have an idea that we sometimes use in England, and it involves a large hammer, a great deal of stress and my darling PC!!! lol

Thanks for your message though, I appreciate your help

Cheers

start/control panel/administrator tools/services

look for windows installer and stop services

its just a band aid solution but see if that works

start/run/type/msconfig/click ok

under services uncheck windows installer>>click ok>>restart

if you need to install something enable it by checking the box again

See if the following works:

Go to Start > Control Panel

Double-click User Accounts

The accounts listed near the bottom specify whether the account is Limited Access or Computer Administrator.

Is Computer Administrator assigned to the account that you log in with?

Hello FZWG, thanks for your reply. I have been to the user accounts section and I have three possible icons. USER COMPUTER ADMINISTRATOR, ASP.NET MACHINE(Limited account password protected) and GUEST ACCOUNT. The first two are highlighted and I'm assuming are enabled, but the guest account is not enabled? does this make any sense?

Thankyou

You might want to give the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility a try. Has helped a lot of people in your situation.

Windows Installer Cleanup Utility

Hi Signman, thanks for your post. I have downloaded Windows installer Cleanup utility, but I'm a little sure how to use it? Am I right in thinking that it simply deletes programs? I'm a bit worried that I might deleted something I shouldn't!!!

Any suggestions?

Thanks

newonnet i to no little about computers. it took almost a week to solve my problem. i just tried all the different suggestions from forums like this and using google to find problems with msi. one of them worked i just don't remember what it was that i did. sometimes people can have the same exact problems but require different fixes for them. try googling problems with windows installer or problems with msi. i'm almost postive my problem was something to do with reinstalling msi.

i think something on this page solved my problem but i am not certain.
