Fresh meat - Bandwidth test changes

Recommended Posts

I know you're probably bored with the CPU-related stuff, so here's something for a break. I need to screw up something else up for a change of pace. :shifty:

First, be sure you don't have anything like a download or P2P running, it will affect your results! Then go to our old test:

http://www.pcpitstop.com/internet/bwdowntest.asp

Then try the new one. Is it more accurate? Worse? About the same? Please post your results.

http://www.pcpitstop.com/internet/bwdownfull.asp

Also, let me know if you've tweaked your internet connection (in particular the receive buffer).

If any of you are lucky to have really fast connections like Verizon FIOS (15 megabits per second), I would be especially interested in those results.

Here is what I got when I tested.

Old test:

Download speed: 5417 kilobits per second

Test details: 3354 kilobytes downloaded in 4.953 seconds.

Receive buffer size: 128480 KB

New test:

Download speed: 5408 kilobits per second

Test details: 3200 kilobytes downloaded in 4.734 seconds.

Receive buffer size: 128480 KB

I should have asked a couple of other questions, like what your rated speed was.

I have made a tweak to use a bigger initial file size to get better estimates, so please give it another try.

It looks like a lot of you haven't tweaked your Internet connections, any reason why?

EclipseWebJS2, you will get a Not Available if you test with anything other than IE since it uses the ActiveX control to get the buffer size. See if the new bigger file size helps, or whether it's actually an issue with your connection.

You guys are making me sad. :(

I can't understand why your results aren't more accurate with the new test. Can you do me a favor? Right after running your first test with the new page, run a second test. Is the second test better?
