I've done this and posted the results under another forum. One of the other techies told me to post the results of HJT here. Maybe someone could move my other post to this forum. It is under PC pitstop test or autofix problems.

Thanks,

Linda

Hi Linda,

Kylie meant well but she is not in the Trusted HJT Advisor Group .

It must be one of them that reads the log. Just hang on & they will get to you.

Regards,

Hi calhoun

Could you give me an idea of the problems you are having please?

How many anti-virus programs do you have running on that PC? It is inadvisable to have more than one providing real time protection as there may be conflicts. Please decide which one you would like to keep and disable the others. You can use them for back up scanning purposes.

If you haven't intentionally put My Web Search on your PC then go to add remove programs and uninstall it.

Reboot and post a fresh log with an update on your problems and how things are now.

Hi Nellie2,

The first problem that was really noticiable was that the computer was running really slow. I started doing virus scans and would get different results with each program. I ran the one from pcpitstop and it found W32/Gaobot.KWS worm. I have gone to the symanted web site and downloaded the removal tool, but it finds nothing. Now when I run antivir it finds TR/Drop.Win.AD.H, but it doesn't offer any way to fix it. When one of these programs is doing a scan it scans over 30,000 files that are all porn. These are where the problems show up. I have no idea where these came from and I can't find them on my computer. They are in c:/documents and settings/owner/complete. I did have 360 share and limewire on the computer. Limewire is where the problems really started. I could never get it to shut down. It is off my machine and I have uninstalled 360 share, but when I boot up, I still get a message to log into it. I couldn't find my web search in add and remove programs. I have pc-cillin running as my anti-virus program, I also run spy sweeper. Antivir and EZ antivirus are also on my machine, but not running. I will go ahead and run HJT again and then post the new log.

Thanks,

Linda

I've done everything down to the scan with ewido. After the scan the first time I had 30,822 infected files. I selected "Perform action on all infections". After the scan finished the first infected file popped up with the message file cannot be removed because it is embedded in the archives, Do you want to remove the whole archive? I have to tell it yes for each infected file. The first time, I cleaned 1270 files and then it slowed down so I rebooted and reran the scan. The first time the scan took 102 minutes, the second time 58 the second time. The second time it found 29,550 files. At least I am making some progress. Do I need to clean all the files individually or is there a way to clean them all at one time? I am now up to cleaning 1900 more files by answering yes each time. The option to Save report is still greyed out. I am going to try telling it no and see if it will let me Save report and send it to you. Then I will finish your directions and wait for your reply.

Thanks,

Linda

calhoun, try emptying your anti virus and anti spyware application quarrantines. It is most likely that the majority of the files that Ewido is picking up have been quarrantined by your AV as I don't see them running in your log.

Reboot when you have done that and try Ewido again

I am making some progress. I downloaded an anti-virus from Panda. If found 29,000 files and fixed them. Then I ran Ewido again and it only found 3700 files infected. I went through these and told it to delete from archives. Then I ran Panda, it found 450. Now I am running Ewido again. So far it has not found anything. When the scan is running, it is still showing all the porn files, but they are nowhere to be found on the computer. Is it time to think about reformatting the drive, or is that too drastic? Computer is still sluggish and I am getting very frustrated. Why do some anti-virus programs find things and others don't?

Thanks,

Linda

::Report End

It seems to have cleaned all the viruses. For some reason it is still scanning all the porn files. I have emptied all the quarantined files. Is there anything else I need to do. Does it seem to look better?

Thansk,

Linda

You said it is 'still scanning all the porn files' Where are these files? Could you show me the path to these files.

Please download and install this disk cleanup utility called Cleanup!

http://cleanup.stevengould.org/

It will get rid of any malware which may be hiding in your temp folders ( a common hiding place). You will also regain a massive amount of disk space.

Set the program up as follows:

Click "Options..."

Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"

Put a check next to the following (make sure nothing else is checked!):

  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Cleanup! All Users
Click OK

Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

Reboot

Now would be a good time to to clear out and reset your system restore points.

Please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(winXP)

1. Turn off System Restore.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.

Click Properties.

Click the System Restore tab.

Check Turn off System Restore.

Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.

Click Properties.

Click the System Restore tab.

UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.

Click Apply, and then click OK.

Do you have a firewall installed?

Ok, I've done all that. I did just run Ewido and the files are still showing up. Here is the path c:\documents and settings\owner\complete\ after complete is the name of all the porn files. I did have PC Cillin, but when I downloaded Panda Titanium it found conflicts with that and uninstalled it. I am still using the evaluation version of Panda. Is that what you would recommend? We also own Zone Alarm. Should I think about reformatting?

With regards to reformatting, it is up to you. I don't like to give up but at the end of the day it is your machine and you must do what ever you feel most comfortable with.

I'm concerned that you cannot find these files when you look for them. Have you tried enabling hidden files and folders.

Double-click the My Computer icon on the Windows desktop.

Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. Select the View Tab.

Under the Hidden files and folders heading select "Show hidden files and folders".

Uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.

Uncheck the "Hide file extensions for known file types" option.

Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.

I found them! When I unchecked "hide protected operating system files" the folder "complete" showed up under documents and settings/owner. I was able to delete them, YEA! I rab ewido, and rebooted, so hopefully things will start working better. Thank you for all your help.

Yay...

Don't forget to rehide your hidden files and folders, they are normally hidden for a good reason.

Here are some suggestions to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future. I strongly recommend installing the following :

Spyware Blaster - It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed.

Spyware Guard - It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

IE-Spyad - IE-Spyad places over 4000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.

I also recommend reading this article written by Tony Klein How did I get infected in the first place

Happy Surfing :roller:

Edit: I'll close this topic now that it is resolved.
