Bluetooth Dongle Troubles

Recommended Posts

I have a Nokia 6600. I have bought a new Nokia 3230. All my old contacts/pictures/videos etc etc can apparently be transfered from one to the other using a 'dongle'.

So far so good.

So I bought the BlueSoleil dongle on dwuk.com at a very reasonable price, but this is where the problems start.

I used the disc to load the drivers, but the dongle cannot detect anything. even worse, I cannot even get the software to search for a bluetooth device.

Even worse still, Microsft's website is talking crap. I have XP Home Edition SP2, and the advice I got from Microsoft when troubleshhoting was to go to Settings/Control Panel/Printers and Other Devices and go on the Bluetooth tab.

Hello!!! I don't have Printers and Other Devices in the menu, let alone one for Bluetooth!!!

All in all, I'm fast getting het up. I knew it was the wrong week to quit smoking!!

Anyone else run this software, having similar trouble, or even had the trouble and cured it??

At the moment, it's getting dangerously close to being launched from my window into the street :grr:

Did you install the drivers before plugging the dongle in? Most usb type devices require that the software and drivers be installed first. I found this on another board that might help you out. Read the reply to his question. Let us know if it helps.

Unfortunately, I did pop the dongle in before installing, but I have taken it out and left it out, and uninstalled all the software too now, but it still doesn't work. When I put it in, it wasn't long enough for windows to try and find the drivers etc etc for it.

When I run the Bluesoleil software, it tells me to connect a bluetooth device, but doesn't recognise the dongle when I do put it in.

Is it possible that my dongle is just not working, and all this effort is in vain?

I have installed/uninstalled the Nokia suite and the soleil software countless times. It clearly doesn't work. Even after uninstalling both of them then just putting the dongle in, windows doesn't even recognise the new bit of hardware anymore.

It's all very frustrating.

Check in device manager and see if the usb ports have an exclamation point in any of them. To get there, right click on my computer, properties, hardware tab, device manager button. Scroll down to universal serial bus controlers. Make sure nothing is plugged into any usb port. If there is a exclamation piont there, highlight it and delete it, exit out and reboot the machine to let windows reload that port. You may need to get a registry cleaner to clean up any remnents left behind from un-installing all that software. Basicaly, you want to start all over except this time, install all the software and drivers before you plug in that dongle. :)

Cheers.

I've had a look and have no exclamation marks. As I have my printer, cordless mouse, keyboard etc etc in my USB ports, should I disconnect them all before rebooting?

I have used Reg Mechanic too so that bit is sorted.

Thanks for your advice so far on this :)

OK when you uninstalled the Nokia software did you run their uninstaller ? they have a separate reg cleaner available for download specifically for this purpose that you should run as well to totally clear everything.

Now which version of the Nokia software are you using, the disk that came from the 6600 box ? if so that may well be the source of your problem, if this is the case download the latest PC suite from Nokia at the same time as the reg cleaner to totally remove the last install, it took them nearly 1 year to sort that little problem and I was going through exactly the same kind of problems when it turned out to be Nokia themselves.

Assuming you are running the OK version of PC suite check in the m router that the correct port is selected for the bluetooth dongle, right click on the icon in the task bar and select properties to check, if it's not showing any bluetooth installed my guess is your running the old PC suite thats messed up, see if any of this helps first.

Hi

The PC suite that I'm using is the 6.6 version downloaded within the last week. I haven't used a disc version.

When I right click on either of the Nokia icons in the system tray (the mobile phone or the 'tennis ball' one), I don't get a 'properties' option. The mobile phone icon gives me all the 'add contacts', 'create ringtones' etc etc, and the tennis ball one gives me 'help' 'phone selector' etc etc. The mobile phone icon has a red 'X' on it indicating that there is no connection. I also have the bluesoleil icon too - blue when it's running and grey when it's not (as it is now).

I also have a new icon that has the network symbol with a red 'X' on it. When I double click that one it comes up as 'Local Area Connection 3 - Bluetooth PAN Network Adaptor - a network cable is unplugged'. This is all with the dongle in.

It seems to me that the software is working fine, but the dongle is knackered. Do you think that's the problem?

I don't know how I can get to that M Router thing you are describing, but I am sure that I have come across it during this searching and the bluetooth box was checked.

Thanks for your help on this :)

I think you have the wrong PC suite installed which is why your having problems, there are several versions which cover various phones, uninstall that version, run their reg cleaner (can be found from the same link below, just scroll down) and download and install >>>This Version<<< and see how you go.

Cheers mate, done all that. I now have a new icon (mRouter) telling me that PC Suite is disconnected. It won't connect either. When it searches it tells me to insert the bluetooth device, but it's already in.

Surely the only thing left now is to get my dongle changed as it must be the only thing left to try. I'm sure that it's knackered :(

When I check properties, the COM500 port is checked, so it MUST be a hardware issue surely?

I have a feeling that your dongle is probably fine, it's just PC suite is one of the most unuser friendly pieces of software you can use with a Nokia, I often have troubles connecting when I need it, try right clicking on your other icon for the dongle and see if you get a connect option under that, also did you get similar software supplied with the dongle for file management etc ? if so see if you can use that, otherwise it's a bit of messing around when you need to connect, TBH I don't really bother connecting like that, I just right click on the file I want to send to the phone then send via bluetooth, upon selecting that (first time at least) it will search for active devices, just make sure your phones bluetooth is NOT set to invisible and is active, then just select your phone (it may find other devices from others passing outside etc depending who is around) and it will send to it.

The other thing you will probably get is it will ask for a pin code on both phone and PC, I just use 123 (you get to choose your own code) as it's non essential and quick to type, type it on the PC by clicking on the prompt if you get it then repeat on the phone when prompted by the phone, once this is done the file will transfer, after go into the phones bluetooth and find the connection to the PC and select options and set it to authorised, that way you wont have to repeat this each time, the same with the PC, once the connection confirmation comes up look for an option in one of these windows to put a tick in a box and tell it to always allow this connection, that way theres no more messing with codes unless you want to connect to another device, see how that works for you, the m router turns green when connected, other than that I found messing around and waiting unchecking the port number under the m router properties was the only way to get a connection to open PC suite properly which is why I just right click and send to most of the time, hope this helps.

Hi

The whole bluetooth thing doesn't work even if I use the Bluesoleil software either. It cannot pick up my phone. The phone is set to visible to all users, but what makes me think that it's the dongle is that when I put it in the USB port, the computer doesn't recognise the new hardware. It does if I put any other device into it though.

Both PC suite and Bluesoleil tell me that the hardware (dongle) needs to be inserted when it already is. Therefore I can only conclude that it doesn't work.

If I right click on a photo on my computer for instance, I don't get an option to send via bluetooth and thats with PC suite and bluesoleil running. When I run PC Suite, all I get is a blank grey screen with the File' Edit, View, Tools, Help options at the top, and nothing else. I am disconnected in the systray too.

I have asked the people I bought it from to send me a replacement. I feel positive that it's the dongle because with all your help surely by now this would all be sorted out?

Well it is always a possibility, I just know how much a pain it can be to connect even when the dongle is fine, but if your not even getting a send to option on right click via bluetooth then that does point to either a faulty dongle or an incorrectly installed one and because of that the PC isn't seeing it.

As you've started the ball rolling on a replacement dongle we'll see what happens, but while your waiting try uninstalling the dongle again, run a reg cleaner such as jv16 to remove any unwanted\unused reg entries, run some maintenance programs such as clean up to remove junk\temp files etc then reboot and reload the dongle drivers again, and when prompted insert the dongle again, see if it's picked up this time.

The thing to remember no matter what your going to do is that if it connects via usb then install the drivers BEFORE connecting the device, but I have seen reports of people just plugging in their dongle and letting xp sort it out and they report it working fine, but I wouldn't like to rely on that myself, what bluetooth drivers does your device use ? many use the widcom drivers, just wondering if it would be worth you looking on the dongle makers site for updated drivers maybe ?

PC suite will always start up like that unless m router is showing as connected, but once you see the send to option under the right click then the dongle itself should be fine, hope this helps anyway.
