  1. Well, I plugged in the adapter and used the CD to find its drivers (without installing the program that came with it) and now when I go into Wireless Network Connection > Change the order of preferred networks > Wireless Networks tab > 'Add' > then look in the 'Association' tab it shows all this: I take it this means that my XP SP3 does support WPA2 encryption? I know the wireless adapter supported it as it said on the box, but I just wasn't sure my system did... Does that also mean that when I configure my router that my ISP sends me to all my own info (own network SSID and password) that that's the way I'll need to set up my wireless connection in order to connect to the wireless network securely? Also, if I turn off the SSID broadcast in the router, I guess I'll need to check 'connect even if this network is not broadcasting' under the network SSID bit?
  2. I'm thinking of getting broadband with Plusnet, but before I place an order, I want to sort out this wireless network adapter that I've bought so that I'm able to connect to the internet (the router will be downstairs in the hallway and my PC will be in a bedroom upstairs). I've Googled a bit about wireless security and WPA2. It should be supported on XP SP3, but when people get around to configuring their wireless network, they don't get WPA2 as an encryption option. I did see this post on another forum (link here): So, to get the WPA2 option, does that mean I'll have to put in the CD, cancel the setup.exe and go into the device manager and do what the person above says with regards to looking on the CD to get the drivers, then restart the PC (presumably?) and then plug the adapter in? Or, do I just follow the CDs setup.exe and follow the instructions that came with the adapter? Hope someone can help!
  3. Just so you know, I managed to install SP3 on Sunday and everything seems OK.
  4. Thanks for that. That gives a bit more assistance than the support page on Microsoft that I printed out! I know that's not one of the absolutely necessary steps you need to take, but I'm not sure if all of my drivers are up-to-date. Should I check and if so, how? All my things seem to run fine, so... I don't really know if there is a need to check or not. I'm guessing my computer is compatible with SP3 going by peoples responses on here, so I should have no need to do that bit, right?
  5. Options menu? Where? With Java I know it's best to remove older versions and install newer versions manually as it's automatic updater is buggy.
  6. Ha! I always forget to regularly check Java for updates It has been a while since I've looked (obviously!) seeing as the updating is done manually. I presume I remove the Adobe Reader, reboot, and then install the newer version, like with Java? Thanks stormy
  7. Also found this for details on my mainboard: http://www.asrock.com/MB/overview.asp?Model=K7VM2 (well I didn't find it personally, but someone else gave me the link )

  9. Thanks for the replies everyone! I'll run Belarc later when I get home from work and post back the findings, excluding my licence keys of course.
  10. Just tried to run a test on IE7 and the utility load timed out. I am on a dial up connection mind you and I've got an automatic update for IE7 currently trying to download, so perhaps that's why it's not working.
  11. I've looked in my system information and the system manufacturer is VIA, system model K7VM2 and the driver is AMD K7 Processor Driver - c:\windows\system32\drivers\amdk7.sys - no sign of intelppm.sys or anything and that's something that's causing the issues I think (?) I don't know anything about this kinda stuff LOL!
  12. The only sticker I've seen on it is a Windows authenticity sticker on the top with a few numbers then OEM and then a few more numbers. As for what comes on when the PC boots, I'll have to post that when I get home as I can't remember off the top of my head. Would I find the answer in my system information (Start > Programs > Accessories > Systems Tools > System Information)? On the PC at work in the system information, there's a system manufacturer bit. Would that be what to look out for?
  13. I don't even know if my PC at home is an HP one I can't see no name or logo on the tower...that's the only original bit of the PC I have. Don't know where the books etc went from it... I'm being a bit of a div, but how would I find out?
  14. This is basically what it says on the tin! I have an AMD Athlon XP 2400+ processor on my PC at home, but some AMD processors seem to cause problems when SP3 is added to the system (on some systems anyway). Just wondered if that was one of the one's that are affected? My motherboard is an ASRock one (I think?!) I did buy the tower bit in December 2003 when it only had SP1a on, so it is kinda old I guess, but SP2 has never caused any issues. Just thought I'd ask as I've been recommended to go to SP3, but kinda unsure cos of the problems with AMD and whatever else has happened.
  15. Thanks lugnut - did try unhiding the folders etc, but I still don't think it came up, but it has to be there somewhere. May just have been me doing something wrong? Thanks for that terry1966. Will bare that in mind for future reference. I had a thought at work earlier about the Microsoft Update website and the Windows Update website - don't know what made me think of this however... I went to Start > Windows Update on my PC earlier and the Microsoft Update website loaded instead! I don't want updates from this website, only Windows Update or Automatic Updates, so I've disable the Microsoft Update part of it and so far my CPU and memory for both the Automatic Updates and the larger svchost.exe seem OK for now, so perhaps it had something to do with Microsoft Update being enabled? I do have Office 2003 on my system and I guess it could've been looking for updates for that at the same time or something? If I do notice the problem starting up again, I'll probably post back here!
