  1. I've had Comcast broadband and digital cable for a couple of years now. It seems that they increase bandwidth every 6months....or so it seems. I have tested my connection through www.speakeasy.net and I am downloading around 14,500kbs and uploading around 750.
  2. OK...to get back the "run" command......find gpedit.msc.....it should be in windows\system32\dllcache.....if not, it will be in system32 somewhere. Double click, get it to open, look for user configuration>adminsitrative templates>start menu and taskbar.....there will be an option to "Remove run menu from start menu". Doupble click on it and disable it. "Run" is back.
  3. I am trying to avoid repairing the OS......this seems like such a stupid problem. EVERYTHING else works! From everything I have discovered so far, this looks like Administrator security settings have been changed. What can I say.......a learning experience. I have learned so much in the past by screwing up my PC and then trying to fix it. It WAS easier with DOS 5.5..............reinstalling only took 30 minutes. I used to have to reinstall Win95 at least once a month. WinXP is a chore.....I reinstall, then install SP2...then do the updates....grrrrrr. I am seriously thinking of just reformatting my C drive and starting from scratch.....but, I'd lose all my games, Offis docs, e-mail, etc... AND YES I have a backup on a DVD....................which don't work. I have YET to have gotten ANY backup to work. java script:emoticon('', 'smid_7')
  4. I tried that...the "run command" option is gone. And, yes, I can boot into safe mode. I have "run" back.....I had to use gpedit.msc msconfig is back......I copied it from a clean install of WinXP I have on my D drive. It had been deleted. System restore will not run now. I can't start it under services.msc. I get an error message "error 2: The system cannot find the file specified" It won't run in Safe mode either. It DOES work if I boot into the clean XP.......I am searching for what files are associated with System Restore. If it wasn't for Microsoft I would have nothing to do on weekends.....
  5. Nope....I get a message stating "This operation has been canceled due to restrictions in effect on this computer" I'm checking what I can in Administrative Tools>Computer Management Thanks anyway
  6. Ad-aware found nothing.......WinDefender found nothing.......I'm sorry, but I stay as far away from McAfee and Norton as I can. They have BOTH screwed me up in the past. EVERYTHING is updated as of today.....7/15.......
  7. Yes I ran 2 virus scans...AVG and eTrust......nothing. SpyBot turned up nothing. NoAdware turned up nothing. I'm thinking it's a registry setting.....everything else works. I have ONLY lost control of "RUN" , msconfig and System Restore. Yes.....I should have known better.......I did scan the files BEFORE I installed them. If I had known better I wouldn't be married..........
  8. Ok...I was stupid....I downloaded a torrent......GoogleEarthPro....I ran the install.exe.....gee...go figure...nothing changed. BUT....now.....when I click on START....there is NO "RUN" option.....I cannot access msconfig....System Restore is gone.....I have tried WinXPRescue, Fix-it, XP RepairPro, Adminsitrative Tools...etc....I have no access to regedit. Apparently my "Administrator" has blocked my access.....WTH!!! I am the administrator!!!!!! I have checked all the security settings I can find. Any ideas?
  9. I wish it were that easy. The "Configuration" menu item is greyed out. That IS where I would select either a "standalone" or a "network" configuration. As for the software being the culprit....possibly. If I could find an older version I'd certainly try it.
  10. I tried a few different Restore points..the oldest was about a month ago. All security options under Administrative Tools>Component Services>Computers are set to allow DCOM access on the local level. And I haven't updated PerfectDisk....the update tool says I have the latest version (7.4 build 46). I haven't changed any other settings in anything I can think of that might have affected this. Quite frankly....I'm stumped. Thanks for your help. though.
  11. First of all, I am not a newbie at this. My first PC was an IBM 386 running DOS 5. I have tried evrything I could think of to fix this problem to no avail. I am running WinXP Pro SP2, 3.04Ghz P4, 1G RAM, (2) 120 GB HD's. Everything is as updated as I can possible get it. I religiously run AVG, CA eTrust anti-virus, Spy-Bot, AdAware, NoAdware and defrag on a regular basis. I am having a problem with PerfectDisk 7.0. When I attempt to run it, I get the message "Failed to connect to the computer "CHUCKS" The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion (0x8007041d)". PerfectDisk will start but there are no HD's present. The EventViewer does show errors with DCOM and Service Control Manager, both referencing PDEngine : (Event Type: Error Event Source: DCOM Event Category: None Event ID: 10005 Date: 6/18/2006 Time: 6:58:09 AM User: CHUCKS\Chuck Computer: CHUCKS Description: DCOM got error "The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion. " attempting to start the service PDEngine with arguments "-Service" in order to run the server: {C13D6073-2D34-403B-B165-66E316AA958F} For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp. All pertinant services are running except for PDEngine and PDScheduler, which will not start. It DID work 2 weeks ago. I have uninstalled and reinstalled to no avail. Found no related errors in the registry. Fix-It finds no problems, XPRepairPro finds no problems. I have read of the same problem on other help boards. Nothing works to fix the problem. Diskkeeper and the Fix-It defragmenter work fine. I really like this defrag program. It moves files, defrags what other programs won't and it's fast. Any ideas? Thanks
