    don't know exactly what i did but fixed firefox and kodi still works. i doubt you'll have any problems nigel, was a graphics/video playback issue in my opinion and can't see that effecting kdenlive, no idea what lollipop is though.

    no idea why but now i have kodi working (which i probably will never use.) i've broken firefox (which i always use.) the side scroll bar is missing, so makes scrolling down the page a hassle because i have to use the scroll wheel for any control.

    ok got it working just go into yast and switch all packages to packman repo and then it started just fine, probably had some conflict with a package or 2 installed from the suse oss repo.

    where you getting kodi from? kodi is in my packman repo and installed without any problems. just tried to run it though and it pops up the start screen for a second and then crashes. will try and find out why.

  7. that second pic confused me but assume it's upside down, is that the psu over the top of where i'd expect to see a big cpu heatsink? if so what clearance does it leave for the cpu heatsink? take it, it must need a low profile cpu heatsink or a watercooled unit that you've got. looks like a skylake itx build to me, so what are the specs of everything installed including that case? don't think i've seen one like it before.
  8. don't think you want to use vlc backend duan, far as i'm aware they stopped supporting it, so whatever the problem is i'd stick with using gstreamer backend. what os are you using? and what if any error message do you get? start amarock in terminal to see it's output that should offer a clue on what the problem is. have you installed all needed codecs? try a zypper up and then see if it works after adding the packman repo if you don't already have it, assume your running a version of suse.

    another choice is flatpak, :- http://arstechnica.co.uk/information-technology/2016/06/flatpak-cross-platform-linux-app-packages/ i like the security benefits of snap and flatpak but must admit i can't see me using them until they are a distro's default app management system. rpm's work just fine for me, even with the occasional dependency conflict.
  13. sounds like the usb drive is failing fast and why even though it is supposed to be 4GB in size it looks like there is less actual usable space on it than the live iso needs. i'd use fdisk as root to double check what partitions are there then delete them, then without doing anything else to it try writing the iso again maybe it'll work now. if it still doesn't work then unless you have another usb stick or can get your hands on one, your only option as far as i can see is to do the install from the hard drive. ignore above, leap 42.1 dvd iso (4.7GB) will not fit on a 4GB drive i thought you were talking about a 13.2 live os, so your first option would be to download the network iso and do the install using that. :- https://software.opensuse.org/421/en ignore below too unless bolded didn't solve your problem for some reason. so what i would do is put both drives in your pc, make sure the pc's drive is first in bios and boot order then boot to the pc's hard drive (i assume it has suse on it and not windows.) and download leap 42.1 iso, rename it to "leap.iso" (without quotes.) and put it on the root of that drive (click on root folder and copy it there outside any folders, might need to be root to move/copy it there, i can't remember.) now what your going to do is add the iso file to your boot menu so you can choose to boot it and do an install off the hard drive instead of using a dvd/cd or usb stick/drive to install leap to the laptops drive. with luck once the drive has an os on it and you put it back in the laptop it will boot and work. full instructions here :- https://forums.opensuse.org/showthread.php/484223-how-boot-opensuse-dvd-hard-disk-grub2 this is what you need to do, open the 40-custom file located in /etc/grub.d folder (you'll need to be root to edit it.) and below what's already written in there, add menuentry "openSUSE Leap 42.1 DVD" { set isofile=/leap.iso set root=(hd0,1) loopback loop $isofile linux (loop)/boot/x86_64/loader/linux install=hd:$isofile initrd (loop)/boot/x86_64/loader/initrd } click save, then close the file. now open yast, click on system, bootloader and when it's open just click ok, that adds the extra menu entry to grub, so now when you restart your pc there should be an extra option to choose "openSUSE Leap 42.1 DVD" selecting this should start the install exactly as if you were booting the usb stick. (it it doesn't then it's probably the drive partition root is on isn't the 1st partition on that pc's hard drive, so i'd need to see the partition table to make the changes needed to this part "set root=(hd0,1)" of what you copied into the 40_custom file.) now all you need to do is do the install making sure to install it to the laptops 500gb drive and not the pc's drive, also make sure the pc's swap partition doesn't get mounted as part of the install partition table on the laptop drive. once it's completed the install just put the drive in the laptop and it should now boot to leap.
  14. tap whatever key you need to, to get the boot options (f12?) then select the usb drive and hit enter, if it doesn't boot and offers you the eroor message mentioned then it looks like your flash drive is corrupt so you will now need to use another pc to create a new bootable os on the flash drive before you can then use it to install the os to the hard drive again.

  18. yes looks good, must admit though the first 15GB partition and the 36MB partition confuse me. both say 100% free. usually i'd expect a 15GB recovery partition to have at least 10GB of data on it and i'd expect the uefi partition to be 100MB even though i don't think it's used with windows 7 so is usually 100% free. not that it matters everything works fine and you now have plenty of free space for your os, and data partitions so well done. curios nigsy why you suggest he wants to consider moving whats on d to the external? surely the external would only be used for backups and it's looking pretty full anyway with only 17% remaining free out of 2TB.

  20. my biggest worry when anyone makes changes to their partitions is the boot loader gets broken so the pc won't boot into recovery options or the operating system. what did you use in the end? can you post a screenshot of your partitions now too? i'm just curious if you still have any unused space on the drive.
  21. caintry he needs to make a complete disk backup, not just the c partition, that way the boot loader/mbr etc. will be included then if anything does go wrong he can put "everything" back to how it is now and still have a booting system. once you have the backup image made gerry, seeing how the first 15GB is a factory restore partition, don't touch it and you'll just expand the d partition so it uses the unallocated space already on the drive, next move the beginning of the d partition to create unallocated space between the c and d partitions, then expand the c partition to use the unallocated space just created. it'll probably be easier for you to use either http://www.disk-partition.com/resource/free-partition-magic-for-windows7.htmlor http://gparted.org/ to actually resize the partitions because all you do is choose the resize option and then put the pointer on the edge of the partition you want to resize and drag it to where you want. so the order you'd want to do things is this, first choose resize, then place the pointer on the end of d and then drag it right until it fills the unallocated space, next put it on the beginning of d and drag it right to create some empty space. now put the pointer on the end of c and drag it right to fill the empty space. so you should now have a larger c partition next to the d partition and when everything looks right save it. here's a video showing the process of resizing partitions (starts about 2m 30s mark.), just using http://www.partition-tool.com/
  22. thinking about it once you have just the 95GB c and 1767GB d partitions and uefi partition, next i'd look at exactly what is using most of your c partition space, if it's programs then i'd resize it to get more space off the d partition, but if it's user data/files then i'd just move them to the d partition, after all that's what it's supposed to be there for.
  23. nigsy posted while i was typing this so the answer to him is no (well not easily, you'd need to make it and the c drive a single logical volume probably using 3rd party software.) ok you have 1 drive, we'll ignore your external, in fact if i was you i'd unplug it till we sort out your partitions. now look at your Disk 0 in your screenshot. notice you have 15GB partition, C 80GB partition, D 1660GB partition, and 107GB unallocated partition and other partitions out of view. if possible can you expand things so we can see them, but at a guess i'd say it's 100MB uefi partition. must admit it's one of the weirdest partition layouts i've seen for ages. is there a reason why you have the first 15GB partition and do you know what if anything is on it? also why the 107GB unallocated? personally i'd delete the 15GB partition once we know it's not used for anything, then expand the c partition to use that space. then i'd expand the d partition to use the 107 Gb space. now you have 2 partitions c + d plus the needed uefi boot partition on end of drive. if you still need more space then you will need to shrink the d partition (from where it joins the c partition and not from the end) and then expand the c partition to take up the new empty space shrinking d created. don't do anything though until you make a good backup of everything so if you make a mistake you can put the drive back to how it was and try again. i'd make a disc image using macrium reflect. instructions on shrinking and expanding partitions here :- http://www.howtogeek.com/101862/how-to-manage-partitions-on-windows-without-downloading-any-other-software/?PageSpeed=noscript i thought you could just drag the partitions to the size you wanted in windows but i may be mistaken and am thinking of some program or other i've used to manage windows partitions. this program may make things easier for you to resize your partitions than using windows built in tools :- http://www.disk-partition.com/resource/free-partition-magic-for-windows7.html
  24. did you read my post? if not see my post above and then tell us (screenshot would be best) what your pc shows. i'm beginning to think you have 1x2TB drive with c and d partitions on it. and 1x2TB external drive from what you posted above.
