i really wouldn't bother duan, just the heatsink will keep it cool enough i'd think, plus then you have the benefit of a total silent device without any fan wine to annoy you, if you find it does reach temps high enough to cause it to throttle and cause problems, only then i'd think about adding a fan. anyway have you had it up and running and tested kodi on it yet, and if so what os did you put on it?

    Raspberry PI

nobody was asking "why?" and i can see the point in owning one, lots of things you can do with a small, low powered, cheap pc as shown by the loads of different projects people have used one for.

    Raspberry PI

it's not be as big as i first thought caintry, (made an edit to my post) so am looking forward to seeing it when he has it connected, still no idea on how he plans to do that though.

how the hell are you planning on connecting that monster to your pi board? it'll probably be 3 times the size of the pi3. if you really want to go over the top cooling it then you might as well water cool the thing. i'd think the biggest heatsink i'd use on one would be the same as in your post 11 and 12 videos. just noticed the 8inch x 4inch x 1inch are package dimensions so the heat sink might not be as huge as i first imagined.

you might find this guide useful then nigel, then you can have a single card with multi os on it. :- http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-install-multiple-oses-on-a-single-sd-card-for-raspberry-pi/

the one you bought and linked to comes with heatsinks already on it according to your link. :- http://www.ebay.com/itm/Raspberry-Pi-3-Model-B-2016-Quad-Core-64-Bit-1GB-WiFi-Bluetooth-with-Heatsinks-/251901505530?hash=item3aa67feffa:g:sXUAAOSwRgJXjanm here's a default one without the heatsinks :- https://www.amazon.com/Raspberry-Pi-RASP-PI-3-Model-Motherboard/dp/B01CD5VC92

    kodi (SOLVED)

it was store bought so came with windows, but to be honest even with a linux os the setup would be the same after installing kodi because flirc works on any os and acts like it's a keyboard, you just use it's own app to set keyboard presses to the remote buttons signal. setting up the pc part was really easy, because both harmony and flirc apps have a kodi setting so things just worked once i chose them. when i set things up on my daughters dedicated pvr using mythtv and a different universal ir remote, i had to train flirc by pressing a remote button and then telling it what key press i wanted it to use, was easy enough but took a little longer to set things up, but still much much easier i found than using lirc and editing files to set up an ir remote to control things like i had to do with my own mythbox.

    kodi (SOLVED)

nothing much to it really, they run a windows 7 pc i'd previously connected to the tv and sound system, so just installed kodi, pointed it to their video files folder and then they could easily find the video they wanted to watch using kodi. to make things work with a remote i bought a flirc device :- https://www.flirc.tv/to control the pc, i bought this instead using any other remote control method like a wifi keyboard setup that nigel uses on his pi kodi machine (and i'd already used one with great results on my daughters mythtv box.) because i wanted everything to be controlled by 1 remote instead of the 4 controls they'd other wise need. 1 for tv 1 for skybox 1 for sound system 1 for pc the universal remote i bought wasn't the cheapest but works great (can control loads of things including lights.) :- https://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Harmony-Companion-Control-Entertainment/dp/B00N3RFC4G/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1470512502&sr=8-3&keywords=harmony+universal+remote then it was just a case of using the harmoney app (installed on an android tablet.) to set things up so at a single button press it would turn on all devices and put things on correct channels for whatever they wanted to watch. not the best and easiest app to work with and took a while before i got everything setup but works great so far. because they use the pc for other things, i left things so they first have to manually turn it on and start kodi but after that everything is controlled by the remote.

    kodi (SOLVED)

i couldn't care less, but i really don't understand why some people do that, seems a little childish to me. does make it look like i'm nuts (even if i am.) and talking to myself though. back on topic though, my parents are happy with their new universal remote and kodi, it's only setup to play their video files at the moment. i still can't make up my mind if i'm going to set it up to stream things off the internet yet.
  11. don't you believe it. yes those programs limit what's sent but nothing stops windows 10 from phoning home unless you have a machine incapable of connecting to the net. :- http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2015/08/even-when-told-not-to-windows-10-just-cant-stop-talking-to-microsoft/
  12. only thing i need to know about windows 10, is never let it get anywhere near any of my pc's. can't remember what tech site i was reading but one of the staff/writers decided it was time to upgrade all his pc's/laptops and out of the 4 machines he had only 1 installed without any problems. there's loads of irate people who lost valuable data during the upgrade and seems like there's loads more this time around with the anniversary updates. one things certain anyway, windows 10 will never get installed on any of my machines, not even in a vm so i can help others with a problem. i simple don't trust an os that doesn't let me turn off things and phones home by design, i like to at least think i have 100% control of my os even if i may not, with windows 10 though you have little to any control over the what the os and microsoft can and can't do on your hardware, like install updates and phone home.

    Raspberry PI

in the uk the board is about £30 then you have to buy a separate power supply, the recommended is 5.1v @2.5 amp and uses a micro usb type connector i believe at about £6 official one here :- https://www.amazon.co.uk/Raspberry-Pi-Official-Universal-Supply/dp/B00MBH6XNS/ref=pd_sim_147_2?ie=UTF8&dpID=41C0YiXEPgL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR160%2C160_&psc=1&refRID=4JWJR0077E968T7YE46Z and of course your going to need an sd card, price varies but i believe you'll want a class 10 type card and not any old cheap sd card for best reliability and performance. when nigsy wakes up tomorrow and see's your post i'm sure he'll have a lot more info for you, seeing how he's running one as his media centre i believe.

    Raspberry PI

don't think it's the model nigsy has but is the one i'd buy if i wanted one. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Raspberry-Pi-Model-Quad-Motherboard/dp/B01CCOXV34
  15. i'd think the old 13.2 cd doesn't support one or all of either uefi, gpt or secure boot, so to install on a windows 10 laptop i'd suggest using a newer install media that does support all those things.

    kodi (SOLVED)

what happened to all of iamgeorgeareu posts? did i upset him somehow and he deleted them or did something else happen that i've missed causing him to delete everything of his from the topic?
  17. terry1966

    kodi (SOLVED)

don't see why not. way i look at it is they are both front end media players, used to play all your media easily. both play anything on your pc, both can be setup to stream content from the net, both can be setup to record things. only real difference i can see is mythtv needs a dedicated backend to start with before it will work whilst kodi doesn't. think of it like this ubuntu is the same as suse, both are linux os.
  18. well it sounds like he's having a whale of a time, now he's feeling better. just remember to take things easy and no chasing the nurses.
  19. ok do what ever you want.
  20. ignore below, just noticed you said you'd installed the rpm and now you have no connection problems and it's just the speed seems bad, so will start a new post to see if we can find out why it's slow. ========================================== i haven't replied because duan is/was helping you and it's just a rehash of the same topic here :- https://forums.pcpitstop.com/index.php?/topic/205283-update-kernel/?hl=rtl82192cu&do=findComment&comment=1800630 where you'd figured out how to fix the problem. anyway i've had a look and made some changes to the instructions as was. i put the correct rtl8192cu-fixes repo instead of rtl82192cu-fixes where you got stuck last time and also changed the version number from 8192cu/1.9 to 8192cu/1.10 which i believe is the latest and correct one. so with luck these instructions will work, but if they don't just let us know where you failed and i'll see if i can figure out why for you. try above and see how you get on.

    kodi (SOLVED)

i'd give you one duan but they won't work for you in the states, we use a different digital signal to what you use over there. we use dvb-t/dvb-t2 and you use atsc/qam i believe. so my cards wouldn't be able to decode your television signals. if you really want one look on ebay, do some research first and make sure it will work on linux, you'll want an atsc/clear qam card :- https://linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/ATSC_Devices if you want a usb type then i believe this works fine :- http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=m570.l1313&_nkw=Hauppauge+WinTV-HVR-950Q&_sacat=0 this is the usa equivalent tv card i put in my last build for my daughter:- http://www.ebay.com/itm/TBS6704-ATSC-Clear-QAM-Quad-Tuner-PCIe-Card-Windows-2000-XP-Vista-7-8-10-Linux-/331721016745?ssPageName=STRK:MESE:IT her card :- https://www.amazon.co.uk/TBS-FREEVIEW-DVB-T2-Terrestrial-Replacement/dp/B00VK0R3KE/ref=sr_1_2?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1468460106&sr=1-2&keywords=tbs+dvb-t2 and i am currently using the older full height type in my setup. :- https://www.amazon.co.uk/DVB-T2-Tuner-Definition-Digital-Receiver/dp/B006MTN32A here's tbs site for drivers :- http://www.tbsdtv.com/products/tbs6704-atsc-or-clear-qam-quad-tuner-pcie-card.html must admit i've spent a few hours testing kodi today and can't say i'm that impressed with it, nothing really wrong with it but mythtv seems so much more intuitive to navigate and use to me even though they are very very similar. probably just me being biased and more used to using mythtv. the content available on kodi via the addons is very impressive though, can't say ive used mythtv to stream anything off the net except for a short test a few years back so no idea how easy or hard it would be to get the same content on mythtv but might look into it again one day.

    kodi (SOLVED)

everything on skygo and netflix can be had like you say through the addons anyway but because it's for my parents i really want to try and make sure they aren't breaking any copy write laws which some of the addons probably are with the content they play, but it seems like i'm in a catch 22 position from what i've been able to glean so far from google, sky go and netflix seem to be the 2 hardest addons to find that reliable work, yet other addons work perfectly and can play the content of those 2 channels perfectly but probably illegally.

    kodi (SOLVED)

i wouldn't use the builds, so understand what i'm going to do, and it's just a case of deciding on which are the best repo's to use and what addons to install. from the comments beneath the tvaddons video it looks like they're upsetting the people who use their repo so might give it a miss unless i find i really need it for something. you have any recommended skins and addons you think i should try george? so far looks like i'll only install addon installer exodus velocity Netlflixbmc can't find a skygo addon at the moment. to be honest all kodi really needs to do is play their dvd collection, sky go and netflix reliably every thing else like exodus and velocity i might skip.
