  1. if you upgrade to Win 10 from a OEM Win 8 Computer be aware if you have a OEM Windows 8 computer (Hewlett-Packard,Acer,Toshiba ect.) and installed Windows 8.1 it adds a extra 350mb recovery partition now if you had to restore back to Windows 8 from the OEM recovery Partition the extra 350mb recovery gets left on the hard drive now from a fresh install back to Windows 8 from the OEM recovery partition you upgrade to Windows 8.1 it adds another 350mb recovery partition so now there is 2 350mb recovery partition and if you keep going back to Windows 8 from the OEM recovery partition and upgrade to Windows 8.1 it adds another Windows defrag see's these 350mb recovery partition as Local Disk (\\?\VOLUME and can not defrag them this persion had this happen to him (13 350mb recovery partitions) Too Many Recovery Partitions http://malwaretips.com/threads/too-many-recovery-partitions.32625/ i also found this Too many recovery partitions Windows 8.1 http://www.eightforums.com/general-support/67348-too-many-recovery-partitions-windows-8-1-a.html i'v asked this question at the Microsoft Community forum on July 8 http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-win_upgrade/upgrade-to-win-10-but-too-many-recovery-partitions/a58f421f-fdfd-4d6d-bd58-82b8168e84f1 the Microsoft Support Engineer says that if i try to upgrade with the added 350mb partitions Windows 10 will not install and could be trouble and says i should Wipe the Hard drive and reinstall ok i know how to do this but what about everyone else to me i think people should know about this before Windows 10 is out what do you think? i asked the same question in this post http://malwaretips.com/threads/if-you-upgrade-to-win-10-from-a-oem-win-8-computer-be-aware.48249/ James

Windows updates and internet explorer won't install

i understand Joe C i got lucky and got a new pc with Win 8 this year now on Win 8.1 but some can't upgrade because of the cost i was there also but got lucky with money i use Win Xp or Win 7 (30 day trial) on Virtualbox to test software to see if i like them VB is a great tool to learn on (dual boot,Linux and such) i just ran into Win Xp not getting updates and found a fix that worked for me after last months patch tuseday and thought it could help i just wonder how meany others it is affecting and thay do not know about it if thay use auto updates from Microsoft thay might not know and become vulnerable as time go's by and thats not good for no one i would guess James

Windows updates and internet explorer won't install

well i had trouble updating my Win xp sp3 VM on virtualbox and thought it was trouble with Microsoft it would not start the updates just set there i even tryed Microsoft update through IE8 and it would hang and not get the updates then i found this Microsoft Update may be broken for XP - Fix by mikiem2 Problem: Auto update or visiting the MS update site, searching for updates maxes svchost at 100% CPU with no search results [seems stuck in a loop]. Why: Seems ie8 needs updated for MS update to work, but the ie8 updates are included in the updates you can't find because update won't work. Fix: Download & install the updates manually, which unfortunately is harder than it should be because MS says to use their broken update site. What I did... I found this page that lists the contents of their update DVD ISO -- http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=41137 Under Details it lists the updates -- clicking on the KB heading take you to the svc bulletin page -> clicking on the link for it pros takes you to another page where you can click on the link for your Windows version. The one exception I found was a 404 page error for KB2868626 -- the link for the XP version is http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=40915 Note that you may have to kill svchost in Task Mgr if it's maxed out in order to manually install [or during install of] updates -- instead you might want to temporarily turn auto updates off, though it may take a restart to prevent svchost from maxing out the CPU. The updates I added manually, after which MS update worked fine -- KB2888505, KB2868626, KB2900986 -- YMMV, you may not need all 3 as I didn't try MS update after installing each one. Note also that optional win7 update KB2830477 breaks the win7 Virtual PC host. http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/forums/topic/80389 after reading this i started Virtualbox with my Win Xp VM and sure enough windows update would not work and svchost was stuck at 25% cpu so i downloaded the said KB's {KB2888505, KB2868626, KB2900986} and killed svchost in task manager then installed them manually restarted and boom my windows update's started working again so if your windows updates after last patch tuseday on Win XP are not working you might give this a try there is also this Microsoft to fix Windows XP update SVCHOST redline issue 'soon' Microsoft has identified why using Windows Update to install patches on Windows XP may lock up users' machines for hours on end http://www.infoworld.com/t/microsoft-windows/microsoft-fix-windows-xp-update-svchost-redline-issue-soon-230940 and the said KB's that helped me KB2868626http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=40915kb2900986http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=40920kb2888505http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=41064 James

Comodo Free Personal Firewall Prevents Risky Software Uses

ok it's just to much to do just to test install a program and what happens if the program needs to restart to complete installing? i can do the same with Sandboxie and i use Light virtualization software called Shadow Defender (not free) to do the samething but it deletes everything on restart also there is Toolwiz Timefreeze and is free but not as strong as SD theres rollback software that works for installing software that needs a restart then you can rollback and it's gone but none free that i know of so i use Virtualbox and a VM of Win XP or Win 7 to test things then i can just delete that if i need to i have a new pc with Win 8 64bit and 8gb ram 1.5tb hard drive so it's not a big deal i can also play with multi hard drives install image software and rollback that way and also learn at the sametime also i do not care for nothing Comodo (personal resions)and it's not very noob friendly as a noob can messup there pc with it and yes i'v tryed the newest version i'm not saying Comodo is bad just not for me but thanks so very much for the info anyhow James

    Can't find a virus!

i would not uninstall Internet explorer as i think it is part of the operating system what i can read about Eset Nod 32 it can be a pain to uninstall and if you had Avast running at the sametime that did not help also Spybot's teatimer can interfere when installing or uninstalling software so you should desable it while you are fixing things from looking at the Eset web site you might have to reinstall Nod32 to get it to uninstall properly and having Avast running at the sametime your trying to do this might mess things up while removing it so it might be wise to uninstall Avast to do this while your trying to get Eset off your pc remember that to avoied trouble when running something you download in Win 7 right click on the download and choose Run As administrator if you have trouble uninstalling Avast thay have a uninstall tool that you run in Safe mode http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility for Eset look at this info for help uninstalling How do I manually uninstall my Windows ESET security product http://kb.eset.com/esetkb/index?page=content&id=SOLN2289 How do I uninstall or reinstall ESET Smart Security/ESET NOD32 Antivirus? Can't find a virus!

hello did you turn off Spybot's tea-timer to see if it conflict's with Avast ? and also tea-timer should not be on when installing Avast or any security software since you had AVG you could try running there uninstall tool to clean up left over things AVG leaves behind because thay can conflict with the Avast install also if there was other antivirus programs on the pc try using there uninstall tools as something left behind can conflict with other antivirus software "AVG Remover eliminates all the parts of your AVG installation from your computer, including registry items, installation files, user files, etc. AVG Remover is the last option to be used in case the AVG uninstall / repair installation process has failed repeatedly" http://www.avg.com/us-en/utilities AVG PC Tuneup has a registry cleaner i believe and it could of fixed something it should not have and cleaning the registry is a risky thing as it can do more harm than good you can try a repair of Avast to see if it installed correctly by going to add/remove in the control panel like your going to uninstall it and click on uninstall Avast and from there instead picking uninstall chose repair and it will do a repair install of Avast also like TomGL2 said did you look in the task manager when the slowdown happens to see what process is using all the cpu ? if something got messed up from Avg PC Tuneup or other things you may have to consider backing up your important stuff on your computer and restore back to factory settings thats the best i can think of if it's not a virus good luck Regards James

    Java error's after updating

hello the only thing i can get out of that is the "Loading Java Applet Failed" the rest i don't understand and the Loading Java Applet Failed leads to the firewall blocking java be it a software firewall or hardware firewall or something to do with a Virtual private network or IPv6 for the software firewall try turning off zonealarm and use the windows 7 firewall and see if it works for the hardware firewall that would be a router or some modems that have a firewall built in them so it could be a setting in one or both if you have a router you could try to go straght to the modem with a Ethernet Cable to see if it's a setting in the router but if it's a firewall in the modem then you might need to change a setting in the modem about the Virtual private network do you use one because i'm not sure what to do about that info about a VPN http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_private_network i beleve IPv6 is turned on in windows 7 if i remember right and some said in my search for help on java for you that thay turned it off and then java worked but your ISP could be using IPv6 now so i'm not sure about that also info on IPv6 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPv6 i wish i could help more and it seems like java is installing for you but something is blocking it you could look here and if something helps also http://kb.mozillazine.org/Java http://javatester.org/index.htm

    Java error's after updating

hello if you restored your pc back to factory original settings and the java that came with the pc worked then something is stopping the install of a new version of java like your antivirus, your firewall.your antispyware programs you say you use Spybot search & destroy if you are using the tea timer with spybot it could be that try turning it off when you install java also when right clicking the installer and running it as administrator it's just the installer that runs as administrator not the java program after install some programs need to install with administrator rights to install properly or could have problems installing also if your using internet explorer as your web browser it's more than likely the 32 bit one that you use and not 64 bit even though you have both on your pc and most people use the 32 bit one as not all plug in's work in the 64 bit version you should try installing the 32 bit version of java as you can have both versions of java on the pc at the sametime and see if that helps and when you go to pogo or the java website thay alwise try to give you the newest version of java even though you allready have it installed like when i go to pogo or java i get a pop down that says (this website wants to run the following add-on javase runtine emvironment 7 update 5 from 'Oracle America.Inc'. if you trust the website and the add-on and want to allow it to run, click here) but i already have java 7 update 5 so i just click the X and close it i understand thay want you to have the newest version of java but it is confusing i hope some of this helps because keeping a old version of java on your pc is not good because of securty resions also i hope someone else here has more ideas that could help

    Java error's after updating

hello so this is a vista 64 or win 7 64 bit computer ? you have not said yet when you install java are you trying to run the offline download or online install ? are you the administrator ? if you are the administrator did you try to download the offline download to your desktop and then right click the download of it and choose run as administrator? at the java console when it asked to clear copy close pick copy then open notepad and right click in it and choose paste it should copy it there now you can copy and paste it in a reply here also when you uninstall java is it from the add and remove in the windows control panel because before deleting any java folders you need to uninstall java first from the add/remove in the control panel when unstalling java it leaves some folders behind so i was thinking thay could interfear with the new install
