  1. Hi deloby, Here is a quick look at your system: I would suggest you have a look at the above installed software & anything you no longer need or use, uninstall in ADD/REMOVE in Control Panel. Anything you no longer use BUT want to keep, burn to CDs & then delete. I hope this helps. Regards, Hawk
  2. Hi LH_Dude, Welcome to the Pit. Give THIS a try. Also, I don't think the test is updated for IE7 & may give a false reading for the temp file cache. Regards, Hawk
  3. Hi paolini, Your TechExpress link is either not correct or it timed out. If you wish to correct it, click on the second link down this page & it will show you how. You will have to run a new test to correct it or click on the previous test results & do it there. What version of IE are you running. IE6 or IE7? Regards, Hawk
  4. Nice test Confed. There are a couple of minor things you could do. Run CCleaner & clean up the junk files.(443MB) You have a total of 18% fragmentation which DisKeeper Lite will defragment. BTW, it is freeware & is made by Executive Software who also makes the onboard defragger. I would suggest you try to increase your free space to 60 or 65% by deleting anything you no longer need or by burning items you wish to keep but don't use to CDs & then delete. To set you IE7 temp file cache, follow the instructions in the following link. http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm After you complete the above, could you run a new test & post a link? Regards, Hawk
  5. The only thing I could find with Google that might help: http://forums.speedguide.net/showthread.php?t=143630 That is strange. Do you have System Restore point back to where it opened? Also, you could try THIS FREEWARE PROGRAM. Let us know how you get along please. Regards, Hawk
  6. Sorry,,,misunderstood. Have a look at the following: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=313808&sd=RMVP Go to START>>>>RUN Type this command in RUN: appwiz.cpl then click OK. If it does not open, appwiz.cpl may be corrupt. I would suggest you run the System File Checker by going to START>>>RUN & type in sfc /scannow (Note space between c & /) & click OK. You will need your Installation CD for SFC to run. Let us know please. Regards, Hawk EDIT: BTW, this program may give you access to Add/Remove programs; http://www.programurl.com/add-remove-pro.htm
  7. Hi examiner1, Welcome to the Pit. The odd time, I have an entry in Add/Remove that doesn't exist. I use a program called Add/Remove Program Cleaner to get rid of it. Not sure if this will get rid of the problem but might be worth a try. You could also go to Start/Search & click on All Files & Folders. Type in the name of the program & do a search for it. If any results turn up, right click on them & click "On open with folder", then delete. Hope this helps some. Regards, Hawk EDIT: In some Forums, Users with the same problem found that Ad-AwareSE would correct it. If you d/l & install, make sure you update before running.
  8. Is the TechExpress link for a new test or is it a carry over from the beginning? If it is new, there is no improvement. By not having an installation CD as you mention early in this thread, you cannot do a format & clean install, which I think is the way to go. IE7 still has bugs in it, regardless what M$ states. I had it installed on this machine & when the problems started, I uninstalled IE7 even knowing that it would mess up a lot of other programs...which it did. I had to reformat & this time I stayed with IE6! I realize the above doesn't help you with your problems but like I said, if it was me, I would reformat. Sorry I can't be of further help. Regards, Hawk
  9. Hi Pauline Miles, Welcome to the Pit. Make sure your firewall, AV & popup stopper are disabled...enable after test. The firewall is usually the culprit in the upload test. For the time being, could you use the appropriate DEBUGGING OPTION to complete the test? When it is completed, click on TechExpress & copy the link starting with http & ending in 16 digits, then paste it in your reply. This will give us a chance to have a look at your tests & possibly find the problem. Regards, Hawk
  10. Hi Jubee, I am not into gaming so I think it would be better to ask someone that is about HT & gaming. Open a new topic in this Forum & I believe you will get some useful feedback. http://pcpitstop.invisionzone.com/index.php?showforum=21 Here is an article concerning CMOS: http://www.smartcomputing.com/editorial/ar...32w10/32w10.asp Regards, Hawk
  11. Have a look at HOW TO ENTER BIOS. To disable HT, just start your task manager, right click on "explorer", set affinity to 1 cpu only... Hope this helps. Regards, Hawk
  12. Hi Jack, Happy you got it sorted out. To post a link to your test results (If you wish) click on the second link down this page & it will show you how. Regards, Hawk
  13. Ok Brian, let us know please. Regards, Hawk
  14. Ok Deloby, let us know how you get along. Regards, Hawk
  15. Ok Brian....Apology accepted. Sorry, I was getting a bit tired at the time after being on the puter for so long. I have the "System Recovery" on both my machines but I reformatted & put XP Pro on both with an installation CD for each. The system recovery is still there but is not on the Local Disk C but rather on a separate partition. It does not give a red flag on either machine but can still be used, which I don't do as I use the installation CDs if I have to reformat. I will contact a Friend of mine (Administrator) & see if he can explain the red flag & give you more info about Optimize. I will ask him to post on this thread so check back later. Regards, Hawk
  16. It usually ignores a system recovery partition but it appears that the test is treating E Drive as a separate drive. I don't write the test so I can't tell you any more than that. I did not say anything about "Optimize". I don't use it so I am unsure what it does. I do know however, that you have an IE temp file cache overflow & many junk files. If you don't wamt to clean them...so be it! Do you know the difference between programs STARTING with Windows & the Operating System? I DO NOT work for PC Pitstop but rather volunteer my time time to try to help people like you. This will be my LAST POST on this thread!
  17. Hi BrianC, This is at the start of your summary: Customized Tune-up Tips • Upgrade disk space (Drive E) • Internet Explorer cache overflow • Clean up disk space (Drive C) • Check disabled devices It appears that Drive E is is a "System Recovery" partition so I don't think it is of importance that the free space be upgraded. IE current cache 134 MB..Maximum set 80MB so you have an oveflow. C Drive: Junk files 2912 MB (2%) You have a lot of programs installed but I see little in maintenance. Not only does you computer have to be protected, it also needs to be maintened. I would suggest you d/l & run this freeware disk cleaner. It is called CCleaner. It should also clear the IE Temp file cache. Your processor seems fine:Speed Rating 9894 (100% of 1150 similar) As does your Memory: Speed Rating 8138 MB/s (105% of 1150 similar) DMA is enabled. However, I think there is a problem with your BW speed: Bandwidth Down 124 Kbits/sec Bandwidth Up 363 Kbits/sec When testing, disable any firewall, AV & popup stopper. Enable again after you are through testing. The following also may be a part of the problem: Drive L =80617 MB (34%) Free Space Should try to increase the free space. I also think that if you cut down on some of the programs starting with Windows, it would help. A couple of good freeware programs that can do this are: WinPatrol Quick Startup (Scroll down for the d/l link) I suspect that shogan191 will be by & add some other useful suggestions. Let us know how you get along please. Regards, Hawk
  18. Hi again Jubee, Thanks for the link. Your test looks pretty good. However, your processor & memory scored a bit low. I would suggest you click on your link & go back to your summary. Click on Test Results in the upper right corner, scroll down until you come to these Blue Files: Name Vendor Complete File Name WAOL.EXE America Online, Inc. I use a couple of freeware programs to stop certain programs from loading with Windows. If you would like to have a look, these are the programs if you don't have them: WinPatrol Quick Startup If you disable some of the startup programs, please run a rew test & post a link. I am curious to see if your processor & memory improve any. BTW, this is a freeware internet speed tester program that might interest you. MySpeed PC Regards, Hawk
  19. Yup....Agree with that Phil! I had my run in with IE7...Never again. Regards, Hawk
  20. Hi again Jack, As aeroman10 aptly pointed out about IE7, most problems with installing hotfix KB914440 deals with IE7. Could you check in Control Panel/Add/Remove & see if IE7 is listed. When you first tried to d/l & install hotfix KB914440, was it from Windows Update? Could you please run a Pit test & post a link to your results please. (See links below) It may give us a better idea of what is taking place on your puter. Regards, Hawk
  21. You can do it that way if you wish. At the end of the test, click on TechExpress & there is a link inside. Start copying from http up to the end of the 16 digits & then paste in a reply. Make sure you are registered at the test Site as the link will time out otherwise. Regards, Hawk
  22. Hi Jack, Try downloading from THIS SITE. Let us know if it works for you after it is installed. Regards, Hawk
