Hello,

We monitor our bandwidth as we are limited to using only so much per month. We use a program called "Bandwidth Monitor" to monitor the activity. As of late it seems like something else is using the bandwidth. With only web browsing and checking email we're getting daily reports of 2-6gb downloaded daily on this computer.

I assure you that we're not sending you on a wild goose chase and this computer truly hasn't been downloading anything like that. After running, Spybot found a bunch of "tracking cookies". Could this have been the culprit? Enclosed is a rsit log and thank you for anything you can contribute to help.

edit before sending off: Definitely not an expert on reading these logs but I did see something in there about Roxio P2P actively running. That sounds suspect but nobody will be touching anything on this machine until after the advice is given. Thanks!

:::and also to add one more thing. We primarily use Firefox but when using Internet Explorer it redirects us to "bing?" after typing in a web address. Thanks again!

Hi and welcome

Only thing showing in the logs so far Symantec and updates for HP using the internet to check for updates.
For Symantec it's written into the program to do this once an hour or so.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune From Here and save it to your Desktop.
Follow the instructions for the browser you use.
Read the instructions about the cookies. Delete what you do not need.

Double click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Check the boxes to the left of:
Windows Temp
Current User Temp
All Users Temp
Temporary Internet Files
Java Cache

The rest are optional - if you want to remove the lot, check "Select All".
Finally click Empty Selected. When you get the "Done Cleaning" message, click OK.
If you use the Firefox or Opera browsers, you can use this program
as a quick way to tidy those up as well.
When you have finished, click on the Exit button in the Main menu.
========================

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop

* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location.

Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

In your next reply post:
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware log
New HJT log

Please do not PM me for HJT help, we all benefit from posting on the open board.

Welcome back

That didn't show a whole heck of a lot. We'll have to do more scans to check for malware related issues.

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad".
This will change from what we know in 2006 read this article:
http://www.clickz.co...cle.php/3561546
Additional info: http://vil.nai.com/v...nt/v_137262.htm
A side note about AIM Messenger, AOL user's and Viewpoint Manager. Viewpoint is one of the graphic engines that AOL uses and it is bundled with the application.
If you continue to use AIM Messenger, it would likely be reinstalled. Or if you recieve some of the AOL E-cards it may ask you to download and run this program to view and run the graphics in E-cards.

Your call
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the
following programs if present:

Viewpoint
Viewpoint Manager
Viewpoint Media Player

Please do not PM me for HJT help, we all benefit from posting on the open board.

Okay here's the requested logs. Everything looking ok?

Actually yes.
RootRepeal is fine

You can delete RootRepeal
And RootRepeal.txt

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition\7.5\Quarantine <--You can delete the contents inside this folder and they wont be flagged again.

C:\Program Files\mIRC\mirc.exe Infected: not-a-virus:Client-IRC.Win32.mIRC.631 1

mIRC is flagged as riskware because it has the potential to be used in a malicious way. Long as you use mIRC responsibly like any other chat program -- (like not clicking unknown links, not excepting files from unknown people, not giving personal info in chat, etc) -- its fine.

If you didn't download it or use it simply uninstall it.

Other then a few unnecessary start up items I really don't see anything.

Have you had any alerts or browser redirects?

I thought that previous to doing this that Internet Explorer was redirecting to places but not anymore. I'm really obsessive about not having unnecessary things during startup. The only thing I want to start is Comcast Caller ID, Bandwidth Monitor, and Symantec. Maybe I'll run Startup Inspector to see what else is starting with the PC. But anyways I guess that's it. I'll keep an eye on Bandwidth Monitor to see if it's giving me any funny numbers anymore. Today seems very normal. The computer has been running all day and 190mb has been used. Thanks for the help!

The following are not necessarily spyware/malware, but we suggest you place a check mark next to the following entries, as these programs may be taking up system resources.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NvMediaCenter] RUNDLL32.EXE E:\WINDOWS\system32\NvMcTray.dll,NvTaskbarInit
(Description: Nvidia system tray applet. Not necessary. Removing this entry will free up a small amount of system resources.)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe Reader Speed Launcher] \"E:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Reader\Reader_sl.exe\"
(Description: Adobe reader startup - unnecessarily uses system resources.)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] \"E:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\jusched.exe\"
(Description: Sun Java update scheduler. Checks for updates. Not necessary. Removing this entry will free up a small amount of system resources.)

Theres a few that can be disabled.

But anyways I guess that's it. I'll keep an eye on Bandwidth Monitor to see if it's giving me any funny numbers anymore. Today seems very normal. The computer has been running all day and 190mb has been used. Thanks for the help!

I'll leave this thread open for a few days in case something should show up.
